Final Fantasy IX

Ragtime Mouse

By
Jarrod Garripoli

The Ragtime Mouse is a special encounter that can be found in the forests of the game’s world, where he’ll ask you trivia questions that you have to figure out if they’re true or false. You’ll know you found the Ragtime Mouse by the normal battle music being replaced with something different; it’s the same music used for the Friendly Monsters. To answer the Ragtime Mouse, you attack either the X (False) or O (True) to the sides of him in battle. If you happen to attack him or answer wrong, he will flee and you won’t get the same question again, thus it’s possible to miss the Beating the Ragtime Blues trophy/achievement. He will also run away if you don’t answer within 20 seconds.

(1 of 2) The Ragtime Mouse will ask a true/false question upon initiating battle

The Ragtime Mouse will ask a true/false question upon initiating battle (left), Strike the correct answer to get your goodies (right)

There’s a total of 16 different questions he can ask you, but only the first 15 are completely random. After answering those and getting to the last question, it will always be the same. You will receive money from the Ragtime Mouse for getting each one right, but find him one last time after the final question, and he will hand over a Protect Ring; you will also receive the EXP and Gil from the Ragtime Mouse at this time. It should be noted that, depending on story progression, you can only encounter the Ragtime Mouse so many times. On the first disc, you can encounter him a total of four times. On disc two (after reaching the Outer Continent), that increases by another six times (10 times total) and once you have the Hilda Garde III, you can finish off this side quest for good.

A group known as the Tantalus Theatre Troupe visits the kingdom of Alexandria to celebrate the birthday of Princess Garnet. Unbeknownst to the royal family and the citizens of the city, the troupe is actually a band of thieves, who are aiming to kidnap the princess. However, to add a twist, the princess was planning on escaping the castle all along, even asking the troupe to “kidnap” her. This little event kickstarts many others, leading to a grand adventure.

This guide is planned to have a beginning-to-end walkthrough of the main story, while simultaneously guiding you through all of the side quests and other goodies in the game.
