Frostpunk 2

How to Get Prefabs

By
Matt Chard

Prefabs are an important resource in Frostpunk 2, and running low on them can have an overall impact on your city, as you may be in dire need of a new Food or Fuel District for the upcoming whiteout. In the early game, Prefabs are relatively difficult to come by, so read on to find out the best way to get Prefabs.

What are Prefabs used for?

You require Prefabs to craft any building. This includes all Districts, Buildings, and Hubs. If you don’t have Prefabs, you simply can’t build anything, and if you can’t build anything, your city will fall into disarray. Fortunately, even in the early game, there are a few ways to get Prefabs, which involves one of the following: Extracting wagons, huts, and other wreckage normally found near the city. Then you have crafting them in Industrial Districts. Finally, you can send Frostland Teams on expeditions to procure some.

Prefabs are required to construct any building in the game. Ironically, you require Prefabs to construct the thing that produces them.

Getting Prefabs

As mentioned above, there are three ways to procure Prefabs, four if you include destroying previously built Districts. The most reliable method is to build Industrial Districts around the City and set them to Prefabs. Your next best bet is to send your Frostland Teams on expeditions, and the worst (but easiest) method is to extract the nearby wreckage and wagons.

Industrial Districts

Industrial Districts can be built on any land near the city where you’ve broken the Frost, which will require six free tiles to place the District. Once the District is placed, you can select it to bring up the District menu. To the left of the menu, you’ll see “Production”. The choices here are either Goods (top option) or Prefabs (bottom option). As you want Prefabs, select the bottom option, and you’ll begin to accrue Prefabs every week; selecting Emergency Shifts will increase the yield.

The more Districts you place around the City, the more Prefabs you’ll get each week. Each District comes with one building slot, and two if you expand the District. Here, you can place Buildings such as the Remolded Prefabs Factory, which you’ll find in the Idea Tree. This will further increase the amount of Prefabs you get per week.

(1 of 3) Select the Industrial District and place it down on six empty tiles.

Expeditions

Expeditions are great for a small chunk of Prefabs quickly, but a lot of the stuff you find in the Expeditions are one-and-done, meaning you’ll get 100-300 per wreckage, but once it’s gone you won’t get anymore, and they won’t replenish. To send a Frostland Team on an Expedition, you’ll need a Logistics District on one of the nodes around the edge of the city. Once you have that in place, you can begin sending teams out to uncover areas in the Frostland. If you hover over an area, it’ll tell you what resources you can find there before you send a team.

(1 of 2) Send out Frostland Teams on Expeditions where Prefabs are present.

Extraction Districts

The final way to get Prefabs is by placing Extraction Districts on top of Abandoned Huts, Wagons, and any other wreckage that provides Prefabs. Unfortunately, like all resource deposits, these are limited, so they’ll do at the beginning of the Chapters, but they won’t last the entirety of it.

Demolishing Districts

Although this won’t get you additional Prefabs, it will get you some Prefabs back should you need them. Simply click on the District you want to demolish, click on the cross icon at the bottom, and confirm it. This is best used when you require some extra Prefabs urgently, and you don’t have the time to wait for the next batch to come in the following week. This works on all Districts, not just Industrial Districts.

If you need some quick Prefabs for an urgent building, destroy an old District to recoup some of its costs.

There you have it, a few ways to get Prefabs. In short, use Extraction Districts on the wagons, etc. at the start of a Chapter, and then use a combination of Industrial District and Expeditions to keep them stockpiled. You’ll want to build a few Industrial Districts producing Prefabs until you’ve stockpiled a nice amount, and then you can make some Districts produce Goods instead.
