Mass Effect 2 Legendary Edition

Best Grunt Builds

By
Matt Chard

This page will show you some of the best builds for your squad mate Grunt in Mass Effect 2. Here, you’ll find details on the best abilities to pick, and the best weapons to equip.

Grunt Overview

Grunt is a genetically engineered Krogan. He is bred and educated in a tank by the Krogan Warlord Okeer as he wanted to create the ultimate Krogan Super Soldier.

When do you get Grunt

Grunt is available after waking him up from his tank in the Normandy after the Mission Dossier: The Warlord has been completed.

Krogan Berserker Build

This build revolves around maxing out Grunt’s passive skill line, Krogan Berserker. This will boost his already inflated Health pool by 50%, and it’ll also increase his innate Health regeneration even more as well as his weapon damage, which is great because Grunt is aggressive by nature. He shines even more when you unlock his loyalty Power Fortification which increases his survivability tenfold, equip him with a Shotgun or Assault Rifle, and you have a mobile weapon of mass destruction.

Power Evolution Squad Points
Concussive Shot 4
Incendiary Ammo 6
Fortification Improved Fortification 10
Krogan Berserker Krogan Pureblood 10

Powers

This section will go into more detail on why the Powers are chosen for this particular build.

Concussive Shot

Concussive Shot fires a high-impact shot that can stun and/or knockdown enemies who have no shields. Also, it is useful for shredding enemies Barriers. This Power is taken in the build to give Grunt a bit of crowd control, or you can use it to take out enemies who charge at you, like Krogans.

Incendiary Ammo

Incendiary Ammo will cause your equipped weapon to cause fire damage, this is especially useful again armored enemies. It also has the chance to panic enemies when they’re being burned, although this only happens on unprotected sentient enemies. Make sure this is equipped at the beginning of the mission to further increase the damage Grunt will do.

Krogan Berserker

Krogan Berserker is fantastic for Grunt, and it’s the reason the build is built around it. At max rank, and taking the Krogan Pureblood evolution, you’ll get: Health: +50.00%, Weapon Damage: +15.00%, Health Regeneration: 55.00 points per second which gives Grunt major survivability. Both evolutions are great, with the Warlord evolution increasing your weapon damage a bit more over Health regeneration.

Fortification

Fortification is also great for Grunt, rounding off his play style nicely. At max rank, and choosing the Improved Fortification evolution, you’ll get 180 seconds of +70% armor bonus. You could take the Heavy evolution if you’d rather have an extra 30% armor bonus at the cost of half its duration.

Best Weapons

This section will talk about what weapons are best for this particular build. This build relies on Grunt being up close and in the face of the enemies.

Shotgun

Weapon Base Damage Accuracy Recoil Fire Mode Fire Rate Clip Size
M-300 Claymore 400.8 Low High Single Shot Low 1

The M-300 Claymore is only available to Shepard as a Soldier or Vanguard class, and can only be obtained during Advanced Weapon Training on the Collector Ship. Grunt can also equip it if you ask him about upgrades on the Normandy

You should only choose the M-300 Claymore if you are going to use Grunt aggressively otherwise the M-22 Eviscerator will be a better option.

Or

Weapon Base Damage Accuracy Recoil Fire Mode Fire Rate Clip Size
M-22 Eviscerator 294 Low Moderate Semi -Automatic 48 RPM 3

The M-22 Eviscerator was originally added with Cerberus Weapon and Armor pack DLC, but in the Legendary Edition, you can research it at the upgrade terminal, as soon as you have Mordin recruited.

The M-22 Eviscerator is a semi-auto shotgun, that does extra damage to armored enemies, something a lot of other shotguns don’t do. This weapon is great in close quarters, or to take out a charging Krogan.

Assault Rifle

Weapon Base Damage Accuracy Recoil Fire Mode Fire Rate Clip Size
M-15 Vindicator 36.8 High Low 3-Round Burst 73 RPM, 900 RPM (Per Burst) 24

For this build, Grunt should be using a Shotgun, but if you want to take an Assault Rifle instead, then the M-15 Vindicator is the one to take. The M-15 Vindicator is found on a couch in the room where Shepard meets Archangel on Omega.
