As mentioned above, you’ll need to track down the "Icy Crystal" iconIcy Crystal, "Icy Helve" iconIcy Helve, and "Icy Metal" iconIcy Metal, then once you have all three, open up your inventory and right click one of the materials to bring up the crafting screen. Here you’ll want to select all three of the items and then the Mourning Frost will appear. This is a Quarterstaff, so its best equipped onto a Mage type classes, such as a Warlock. If you aren’t a mage yourself, then "Gale" iconGale and "Shadowheart" iconShadowheart will make great use of this weapon.

These materials are scattered all around the Underdark and some of them require you to take down some challenging opponents, so you’ll want to make sure you’re at least around level 4-5 and your spells are fully recharged by taking a full rest. Additionally, make sure you’re stocked up on potions by purchasing them from the merchants or by finding them in random crates.

The Icy Crystal will require you to uncover a large portion of the Underdark, as you’ll need to visit a camp which is located in the northwest section of the map. You can reach this by following the path to the west from the Underdark Beach Waypoint. If you’re a little bit lost in terms of how to get around the Underdark, then checkout our Act 1 Underdark: Map, Entrances, POIs page. Once you reach the "Dread Hollow" iconDread Hollow (X: -46 Y: -171) area you’ll find an enemy named Filro the Forgotten which doesn’t have much HP so a simple Eldritch Blast will make quick work of him. After you’ve taken the enemy out, inspect the body and collect the Icy Crystal.

Where to Find the Icy Helve in Baldur’s Gate 3

The Icy Helve is by far the easiest of the three materials to find, but the enemy defending it isn’t. In order to find it you’ll want to go to the starting area (Selunite Outpost), then you’ll see one of the windows on the left side of the room doesn’t have any bars blocking it, so you’ll want to head through and drop down to the area below. Here you’ll be greeted by an enemy which is called the Spectator. It has a large amount of health and it summons adds throughout the battle, so you’ll want to take these down first before focusing on the Spectator to prevent you from taking too much damage whilst waiting for your turn.

The Spectator will get to use multiple attacks on its turn, so you’ll want to make sure that your health is topped up and use any spells to increase your defense before ending your turn. When it’s your turn you’ll want to deal damage with long-range spells like "Eldritch Blast" iconEldritch Blast or "Fire Bolt" iconFire Bolt, as this will prevent your companions from taking too much damage when it’s the enemies turn. Additionally, you may want to place "Grease" iconGrease down on its location to limit its movement. Once you’ve taken down all the enemies, inspect Dhourn’s corpse and collect the Icy Helve along with other useful goodies.

In order to find the Icy Metal you’ll want to travel over to the "Ebonlake Grotto" iconEbonlake Grotto which is located to the north of the Underdark (X:55 Y:-88), then you’ll need to convince the Sovereign Glut to give you access to the Guardian Gate, so create a save, then speak with him and choose the option “Fill your heart with memories of your most treasured places”. Return to the Guardian Gate and destroy the branches with melee attacks, then inspect the Pale Corpse and pick up the Icy Metal.
