Baldur's Gate 3

Murder Tribunal Walkthrough in BG3: Unholy Assassin and Finding Orin

By
Craig Robinson

After messing around in "Rivington" iconRivington and playing detective to some murders you stumble upon, you are now hunting for ritualistic, pre-meditated killings. Once you find the note hidden near where you found the Dwarf who worked for the Sharess Caress, speak to the detective, then head into the Lower City with the key he gave you. When you approach the city, you’ll find some murder targets you can take out. Alternatively, you can find the killer on the path, and start the Murder Tribunal quest. Here’s a Murder Tribunal walkthrough, showcasing stages on starting the quest, the Candulhallow’s Tombstones entrance, and of course, becoming an Unholy Assassin or not.

Here is a walkthrough on how to complete the Murder Tribunal Quest and the choice regarding becoming an unholy Assassin of Bhaal or not.

Murder Tribunal Walkthrough in Baldur’s Gate 3

You can either kill Dolor, or kill some of the murder contracts yourself and gain access to the Murder Tribunal Quest in BG3

When you head over to the fashion store, where one of the potential murder targets is, you will find that Bolor and his changelings are here for his sixth and final kill needed to ascent him as an Unholy Assassin. If you defeat the man, you will find a pouch full of severed hands, each belonging to the murder targets on the sheet you found near Sharess Caress. You can also find a note that you can read to learn of a password you’ll need to enter the Bhaalist Cabal later. If you take the bag, an assassin will eventually approach you. We found him inside the lady’s mansion, but we suspect that’s likely a bug. Either way, an assassin will approach you and tell you about the kill, and the Murder Tribunal you can access. Both stealing the serial killer’s hands or murdering one of them triggers the event.

You can also go around killing the hit targets yourself if you want to, and the assassin can approach you that way too. You can also find a corpse of a clown in a small room near the Elf Tavern on the back street that is in the corner next to the two stone walls. You must pick the lock to enter, and find the clown carcass.

How to enter the Candulhallows’ Tombstones Murder Tribunal Entrance

The button needed to enter the Murder Tribunal area is hidden behind this picture in the Candulhallows’ Tombstones building.

Once the assassin has informed you of the rough location of the murder tribunal, you will need to head to small coffin makers near the graveyard. You can find this tiny building on the small pathway that leads from the Elf Tavern to the Graveyard. Partway up the road, you will stumble upon a small building with many tombstones and coffins inside. You can also get a key from one of the Changelings you killed with Bolor if you don’t fancy wasting lockpick or a "Knock" iconKnock spell cast on it.

As you enter, go into the room at the back, and you will find a painting along the wall on the right. You can move the painting if you want, or hover your mouse around the location if necessary. If you manage to do it successfully, you will find a button, which you can press. Once you press it, it will swing the bookcase open opposite the wall, and you can enter the Murder Tribunal in a location called the Bhaalist Crypt.

Completing the Murder Tribunal

(1 of 2) You need to use the hidden phrase you found on Dolor’s body to enter, or show them your killing trophies.

You need to use the hidden phrase you found on Dolor’s body to enter, or show them your killing trophies. (left), When you infiltrate the Murder Tribunal in the Bhaal Crypt, you can either convince them you are a psychopath, or go full evil and admit you do enjoy the Bhaal ways to gain their trust. (right)

When you enter the Bhaalist Crypt, you will find some guards towards the bottom. Speak to them, and let them know you know about the murders. If you didn’t commit any murders, you can use the bag as evidence that you killed those people. If you killed people, then you have the evidence anyway. Either way, you will not infiltrate the Bhaal Cult as part of the quest objectives.

Once inside, you get more information about what is going on, with the cult speaker talking to you. Here, you can get more information about Orin and her weird ways, and find out her location for the main quest. As you have the information, you can walk away with more knowledge of Orin and proceed with the main storyline. However, there’s more to this tale if you want more info on the "Investigate the Murders" iconInvestigate the Murders and Murder Tribunal infiltration objectives.

Should You Become an Unholy Assassin in Baldur’s Gate 3?

(1 of 2) It’s time to kill Detective Nelly and join the dark Brotherhood. Oops, I mean Bhaalists. Or you can save him and get into a scrap, it is up to you.

It’s time to kill Detective Nelly and join the dark Brotherhood. Oops, I mean Bhaalists. Or you can save him and get into a scrap, it is up to you. (left), If you join as an Unholy Assassin, you can grab the Bhaalist Armor, which is probably the BiS chest piece for Rogues in the game. (right)

If you follow the speaker into the other ceremony room. You will find the Elephant man who was investigating the murders in the Open Hand Monk monastery near Rivington. He is the same NPC you take the note to, and start the Investigate the Murders questline. If you wish to become an unholy Assassin, you need to 1v1 the elephant detective, albeit it is not much of a 1v1, as he’s chained up.

Yet, if you break his chains, you and your party will have a massive scrap with the Bhaalists, and be able to defeat all the spectators, regular cutlets, and the speaker. You will have infiltrated the Murder Tribunal, freed the elephant man, beat the cultists, and stopped and solved the murder questline.

However, if you decide to unsubscribe the Elephant Man from life, you will earn the right to become an Unholy Assassin. Becoming an Unholy Assassin allows you much easier access to the main temple Orin resides near the Undercity, in the Lower City sewers. You also get access to a trader in the Bhaalist Crypt, which offers some very powerful items, one of which grants you vulnerable damage with piercing weapons, making it a very OP armor piece for Rogues. The item is called Bhaalist Armor if you’re interested in acquiring it.

So, it really is a playthrough choice. Note that being evil here rewards you better than being a goodie. Moreover, you get easier access to one of the baddies too, along with some ridiculous items. However, being a goodie means fighting more baddies, so that’s a lot of experience, items to loot, and more to come.

There’s also some heavy flavor text for one of the Origin characters if you choose to be a baddie too. So, if you’re playing the character in question, you can get some nice touches for doing all of this content.

You can also get the achievement / trophy, Murder in Baldur’s Gate for going through with the ritual.
