How to Fish in Nightingale

By
Ben Chard

What would a Survival game be without some kind of Fishing system? For all you anglers out there, you’ll be pleased to know that Nightingale features a fishing system for you to get your teeth stuck into. You’ll need to progress the game a little before you can get access to it, and there are some important steps you’ll want to take before you get started. This page will detail how the fishing system works and what you can expect to obtain from it.

Grab your rod and hit the water, it’s time to go fishing in Nightingale!

How to Unlock Fishing in Nightingale

The critical component when it comes to fishing is to actually obtain a Fishing Rod, and you won’t be able to get your hands on one of them until you finish the prologue and get yourself into your Abeyance (home) realm. Once you’ve got your bearings, check your map and look for the Essence Trader, odds are they’re near the Antiquarian Dungeon, which may be a long journey. Take the time to gather a lot of Plant Fibre along the way with a Sickle, this is handy to extract into Essence, the currency you’ll need once you get there.

The Essence Traders will always sell important recipes and should be your first stop in any new realm, but for fishing, there are a few key recipes you’ll want to purchase while you’re here. The first is the Simple Fishing Rod, located in the Simple Items sub-menu, which will set you back 30 Essence. While you’re here, take a look at the Realm Cards on offer too, you should immediately spot the Angler Card, this will not only improve your skill and yield when fishing, but also hide you from hostile enemies.

How to Craft a Fishing Rod

Return to your Estate once you have the necessary recipes and use the Simple Workbench to craft the Simple Fishing Rod, you’ll need the following materials for it:

  • 1x Wood Bundle
  • 2x Animal Fibre
  • 1x Bone

The Animal Fibre may be a material you’re unfamiliar with, but you can get it by simply using any meat at the Tannery. If you’re looking for animals for their meat, take a quick trip around your Estate (you should also get the Bone from this too).

How to Use the Fishing Rod

Now that you have your trusty Rod, it’s time to take it for a spin. Use the map to find any nearby pool of water and head for it. Once you’re there, pull out your rod and then hold the Left Click (MouseLeftButton) to cast the line, the longer you hold it in, the further out you reach. It’s then just a matter of waiting until you get a bite, look for the name of the fish that appears above the lure, and then press the same button to begin reeling.

Your Stamina will now come into play as it will drain while you attempt to land your catch. The higher the number of the fish will affect how difficult it is to reel in so consider using a Stamina potion before you cast. The first Rod will limit what you can catch, so don’t spend too much time with it as you’ll soon get access to a better one once you reach the T1 realms.

How to Make Fishing Easier

So now that you know how to go about fishing, you may wonder how you can land those larger fish or become more efficient. Thankfully, like most things in Nightingale, the Realm Cards will come into play.

As mentioned earlier, the first Essence Trader in your Abeyance realm will sell the recipe for the Angler Card. Take this to the Realmic Transmuter in your current realm and you can play it as a Minor Card which will bestow no negative effects. Once played, the Angler Card will grant the following benefits:

  • Increased Fishing Skill
  • Increases Fishing Yield
  • Hides you from hostile sight

Additionally, if you find yourself setting off on a longer fishing expedition, consider applying the Charm of Endless Fishing to your rod, this will prevent you from growing hungry or tired whenever you have your line cast.

Nightingale is a PvE open-world survival crafting game with a few unique features for the genre. First among these is the Realm Card system, whereby players can discover and craft Major or Minor realm cards to influence aspects of procedurally generated worlds or character attributes respectively. You may find yourself in a more forgiving or hostile world depending on the Major cards you use, but the Minor cards can give you an edge against foes with boosts to damage, health, stamina, or other aspects of survival. The game is set in the Victorian era and has more than a little influence from Steampunk fiction, so if that’s anything like your thing, you’ll love this world!
