When you first land on the shore in No Rest For The Wicked after the initial tutorial, some of the first items you will want to find are tools, alongside a blunt weapon or shield. These tools are incredibly important as they can net you materials for crafting, upgrading, and selling to merchants.
While initially, you won’t have to worry too much about doing this, you will want to gather what you can as you explore as any materials are useful to have. Here is where you can pick up the shovel early on.
Shovel Locations¶
A shovel can be found in chests or found in the environment in the first area: The Shallows. You can also buy it from Fillmore in the Mess Hall in the same area. He will eventually make his way to Sacrament alongside you if you are in the process of traveling there, so you can also grab a shovel there. However, by then you should already have one.
Loot is randomized in No Rest For The Wicked so where you find a shovel might not be in the same place we found one. However, you should find one in the Shallows.

The shovel is one of four tools you will need in the game to be able to interact with the environment and gather materials. With the shovel equipped in your inventory, you can head over to a spot in the ground with a hump and some cracks to dig around half a dozen times.
Once a spot has been dug up, it has a chance to respawn over a period of time, or when revisiting the area from another location or dungeon.
Keep an eye out for spots on beaches and in the ground to dig. They can easily blend into the environment.
