Kraken Boss Guide

By
Jarrod Garripoli

You’ve finally arrived at "Rhata Harbor" iconRhata Harbor and are set to board a boat, but got distracted by some false accusations from the little rat squirrel guy. After solving that, your party boards the boat and seems to be continuing their journey, but the ship is attacked by a large sea creature. The "Kraken" iconKraken represents that first boss of the game that will likely be some challenge, so this page will go over its attacks and offer some strategies for the beast.

You will do battle with Kraken once you are on the ship.

All of Kraken’s Attacks

  • Tentacle Swipe: A large red marker will appear on one side of the ship, indicating that the Kraken will do a swiping attack on that side with its tentacle.

  • Double Tentacle Crash: Two sets of red markers appear in front of the Kraken, which means it will slam both tentacles on the ground right ahead.

  • Tentacle Slam: Similar to the previous attack, but the Kraken only slams a single tentacle down in front of its body.

  • Bubble Breath: Kraken shoots out a bunch of bubbles from its mouth. Might be easier to dodge by staying to the sides.

  • Ink Barrage: The Kraken will shoot out a bunch of ink that has markers for where they land on the ground. This covers the spots it hits with the ink and your characters take some minor damage-over-time while standing in the affected areas.

(1 of 5) Be wary of the big sweeping attack, as it covers a large area.

  • Diagonal Tentacle Slam: This is similar to the other ones, but Kraken will slam it in a diagonal across the area.

  • Summon Enemies: At some point during the battle, Kraken will start summoning enemies, specifically "Tezla" iconTezlas. These enemies are the little jellyfish ones you can find on the beach areas sometimes.

  • Ship Capsize: Not really an attack that does damage, but Kraken will grab the front of the ship with its tentacles, then use its head to tilt the ship into the air a little bit. This causes your characters to fumbled backwards and Kraken’s attacks seem to come out faster for a short duration.

Kraken Boss Strategy

While you have three party members now, you still only have two Elemental Vessels, so one character will be without some extra power. Unlike previous bosses, the fact that you’re on a ship and don’t have a huge arena is why this can be a challenging boss. Throughout the entire fight, the Kraken will use its tentacles to attack, with the majority of those attacks having a designed area shown in red before they are performed. It also has a few other moves it can do that don’t use the tentacles, but you will likely be attacking the tentacles to deal damage.

The Kraken’s head is also a spot you can strike, but there are a few attacks that land right in front of the head, so you will have to be moving constantly. After the majority of the tentacle-based attacks, it will stay on the ground, which is your chance to attack it. Your best bet is to just stick to the tentacles, as they are much safer. The Kraken does have two attacks that don’t use the tentacles, too, which are its Bubble Breath and Ink Barrage. The former is easily dodged by sticking to the sides of the ship, close to the tentacles, as you have free reign on them while it’s performing this maneuver.

(1 of 3) Later in the battle, the Kraken can summon some enemies to join the battle.

The latter ability will have the Kraken spew some ink over the deck, which will leave behind some splotches. If you stand in these areas, you’ll take some very minor damage, but your characters will also be interrupted. The Kraken will also be able to summon some lesser enemies in the second half of the fight, which are Tezlas. If you have a Class Strike primed and ready, this is a good time to use it, so you get the lesser enemies out of the way and can concentrate solely on the Kraken.

The boss is weak to fire, so if you have "Val" iconVal as a Rune Knight and have Fire Saber, use it to get extra damage from your characters. Also, don’t forget about using the "Luna Globe" iconLuna Globe (Moon Vessel) here, as it slows down the time and allows you to get more hits on the tentacles.

For defeating the Kraken, you will receive the "Kraken Corestone" iconKraken Corestone, as well as the "Soul Guard Tonic" iconSoul Guard Tonic. The former is something you can’t use yet, but the latter is an item you can use to expand the Elemental Plot. Each character has their own respective tonic, with the "Soul Guard" iconSoul Guard Tonic belonging to Val. Head to the Elemental Plot, select the first set of locked skills on the tree and press the button on the bottom of the screen to unlock those skills.
