Substories are the wackier stories in the Like A Dragon series, to offshoot the more serious tone of the main story. You will first unlock the ability to do Substories in Chapter 2, although they aren’t shown on your map, so you will need to fully explore each map to find them. This page will give a walkthrough of The Hungry Cat substory, found in Rakugai.
Where to Start The Hungry Cat in Like a Dragon: Ishin¶
You will need to have gained access to the Another Life portion of the game in Chapter 4, before you’re able to do this Substory. Once you have gotten to that point, head on over to Rakugai and look for the Scarecrow Chateau. Just west of it, you should see two columns of buildings in the East Umekojicho section. In the middle of those two buildings, you will find the cat needed to start this Substory.
How to Complete The Hungry Cat in Like a Dragon: Ishin¶
Upon interacting with the cat, you will notice that it is hungry. Being a cat, it will want some fish, of course. There are two sources of fish in the game, depending on the kind of fish you want. For the case of this Substory, the cat will take any fish, so you can take it easier on yourself and just purchase some from the fish vendor in Fushimi. The other way to get fish is to actually go do some fishing. There are three fishing spots (one has two options) in the game, two of which are on the docks in Fushimi. The third fishing spot is in the southeastern corner of Mukurogai.
The simplest option would be to purchase the fish at the market, including the ones for increasing the bond. As just said, any fish will do and if you intend to complete the cat’s bond, then you want to purchase three of the cheapest fish, as well as a Sea Bream. Give the cat a fish to complete the Substory.

Where to Find a Sea Bream in Like a Dragon: Ishin¶
After initially finishing the Substory portion, you will need to enter any building in order to reset the cat to take another fish, which will increase its bond. The place where you can train for the Gunman style is very close, and the Scarecrow Chateau is also close. The first two fish after the initial Substory can be any of them, so that doesn’t matter. However, the cat becomes a little picky after the third fish, with Ryoma seemingly mentioning a Sea Bream. Luckily, you can purchase a Sea Bream from the same fish vendor, as the other fish.
If you wish to go after the Sea Bream yourself, you will need either the Seamaster Expertise rod, or the Peerless Pole (all poles are purchased with Virtue). Head to the western of the two fishing spots in Fushimi (the NPC one), then choose the Fishing Banks option. If you see a fish at the northern end of the red line (with either of the poles above equipped), that will likely be the Sea Bream. If you don’t see it, you could use some bait, or just quit fishing and try again. Once you have the Sea Bream, bring it to the cat to increase its bond.
Where to Find a Tuna in Like a Dragon: Ishin¶
The cat will become even pickier with the last fish it wants, with Ryoma suggesting that he’ll bring it a tuna. The Tuna cannot be bought, so you will need to actually fish for it yourself. You will need either the Seamaster Expertise rod, or the Peerless Pole to catch it. Head to the same NPC as for the Sea Bream (if you caught it yourself), then choose the East Coast option. The Tuna, or in this case, the Bluefin Tuna can be a little bit on the rare side, so you might want some of the best bait before attempting this (there is a Baitmonger walking around in Rakunai; he’ll be one of those carrying the stick and two boxes).
The Tuna will be a bigger shadow and be near the top of the red line, if you’re using the above rods. If you see a large shadow near the middle, that is probably the shark. Of course, the Marlin is another contender for a large shadow along the top, so you might get that instead. If you don’t see the required shadow, then either use bait, or exit/re-enter the East Coast. It might take a while to get the tuna, but it’s not tough to actually reel it in once it appears. Bring it back to the cat to max its bond, and you will also be able to name it, before taking it to your second home.
