Path of Exile 2

The Mad Wolf of Ogham - Candlemass, the Living Rite Boss Guide

By
Nathan Garvin

On the first floor of Ogham Manor - Count Geonor’s demesne - you’ll find a shrine that is now home only to madness and evil. This page will provide strategies for defeating Candlemass, the Living Rite in Path of Exile 2.

Page Breakdown

Candlemass, the Living Rite Location

Explore the first floor of Ogham Manor until you find a shrine - the exact location is random, so you’ll just need to follow the edge of the map until you find it. The shrine is fairly large and the aisles between the pews leading up to said shrine make it hard to miss, so you shouldn’t accidentally stumble past it. Once you’ve found the shrine, head up to an altar to find a statue with a “Psalm of Madness” plaque in front of it. Read the plaque and the statue will reveal itself as Candlemass, the Living Rite!

Find a shrine in Ogham Manor and read the Psalm of Madness to provoke Candlemass, the Living Rite!

Candlemass Boss Strategy

Candlemass, the Living Rite is a candle-covered humanoid monstrosity with reptilian features. Despite its otherworldly appearance, however, it’s somewhat conventional in combat, using a flaming sword in combat in addition to several other fiery abilities - those candles aren’t just for show, apparently! While nowhere near as complicated as a major story boss like Lachlann or [Count Geonor], this enemy can still pose a problem if you’re unprepared - every bit of fire resistance will help, and this is one of the few early game fights where you might just have the means to drastically improve your odds in your inventory screen. Slip in a ring and/or charm that boosts fire resistance and you’ll be appreciably better off.

Below you’ll find all of Candlemass’s noteworthy attacks:

Flame Slash

Perhaps the most common attack you’ll see, after a notable windup Candlemass will swing his sword, shooting a fiery arc forward. This attack deals moderate damage if it lands and Candlemass can course-correct somewhat if you move during the windup.

Fire Breath

After rearing backwards momentarily, Candlemass with breathe out a persistent gout of flame. This attack deals heavy damage if you stay within its effect for any length of time and has moderate range, but you should be able to just back down the aisles between the pews to get out of range, or better yet, flank Candlemass while he’s rooted in place during the attack. Candlemass will abandon the attack if you’re out of range.

Leaping Smash

Candlemass will leap into the air and crash down with his sword leading, shooting a blade beam in the direction he’s facing when he lands. You mostly have to watch out for the AoE impact damage with Candlemass lands, with the ranged component being mostly wasted due to the limited size of the shrine, save for the rare instances when you dodge backwards during the attack and get out of range of the slam by not the blade beam.

Meteor Burst

Perhaps this boss’s most dangerous attack, Candlemass will shoot a stream of explosive fire bursts from his back, saturating the area in front of him and also dealing less concentrated damage to the sides and area immediately around Candlemass. You can only fully avoid damage from this attack by keeping your distance and dodging to the side/rear of the boss, but as long as you’re not standing in front of the boss you should only take chip damage.

(1 of 3) Candlemass can shoot out a flame arc with his sword swings,

Candlemass has other, less worrisome sword swings he’ll use between these attacks, but the ones given names above are what you have to watch out for, and there’s a common weakness with all of Candlemass’s attacks. No, not just being fire elemental - in addition most of these attacks can’t be adjusted, either rooting Candlemass in place or forcing him to concentrate most of his attacks in a specific direction. If you stay at close to moderate range and dodge to the side of Candlemass during most of these attacks, you’ll be able to land some free hits on him… or mostly free, you might still take some damage from the odd nondescript melee attack or a glancing blow from “Meteor Burst”

(1 of 2) Defeat Candlemass and he’ll drop Candlemass’ Essence,

Defeat Candlemass and he’ll drop Candlemass’ Essence, (left), which will give you +20 Life when consumed. (right)

Defeat Candlemass and in addition to his standard drops he’ll leave behind Candlemass’ Essence, which, if consumed, will boost your Life by +20 permanently. Not a bad boon for an optional boss.
