Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

How to Defeat Ice Gym Leader Grusha (Rematch)

By
Vincent Lau

This is a guide for defeating Grusha, the Ice Gym Leader, during his rematch in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet.

How to Rematch Grusha

Grusha is as chill as ever.

You can rematch Grusha after completing the Area Zero story (after seeing the credits roll) and visiting the Director’s Office at Naranja/Uva Academy. Geeta will ask you to visit the eight gyms of Paldea in her place, as part of an inspection. During this time, you can challenge the gym leaders at their full power!

Recommended Pokémon for Grusha During His Rematch

Grusha still favors Ice types, so we recommend bringing some Fire, Rock, Fighting and Steel types.

His Pokémon are all Level 65-66, so your Pokémon should be Level 65+ to match.

Here are some suggestions:

  • The Tera "Lucario" IconLucario at Dalizapa Passage. It’s both Fighting and Steel, on top of being super strong.
  • If playing Scarlet, this is a great opportunity to unleash your Koraidon.
  • Chi-Yu, a powerful Dark and Fire Legendary, found in a sealed shrine.
  • Tinkaton, a Fairy and Steel type with a powerful Gigaton Hammer. You can catch a Tinkatuff from North Province Area One and evolve it.
  • If playing Violet, Iron Valiant, a Fighting and Fairy Paradox found in caves in upper Area Zero.
  • Garganacl, a common Rock type in the lower part of Area Zero.
  • "Volcarona" IconVolcarona, a Bug and Fire type found in Area Zero.

What Pokémon does Grusha Use During His Rematch?

Pokémon Level Type
"Frosmoth" IconFrosmoth 65 Ice Ice Bug Bug
"Beartic" IconBeartic 65 Ice Ice
Cetitan 65 Ice Ice
"Weavile" IconWeavile 65 Dark Dark Ice Ice
"Altaria" IconAltaria 66 Dragon Dragon Flying Flying (Tera Type: Ice Ice)

Frosmoth

Lucario can easily solo this fight.

Like your first fight with him, Grusha leads with his "Frosmoth" IconFrosmoth. Its move set is oddly unchanged: "Blizzard" iconBlizzard and "Bug Buzz" iconBug Buzz for STAB, plus "Tailwind" iconTailwind to temporarily boost its party’s Speed.

Rock types are a sure win, since they deal quadruple damage. Fire and Steel types are also good.

Beartic

It’s the polar bear again. Its move set is also exactly the same: Icicle Crash for STAB, "Earthquake" iconEarthquake to annoy Fire, Rock and Steel types, and Aqua Jet to get the last laugh.

Like before, Fighting types will make it wince.

Cetitan

Hmm, shall we go for Meteor Mash or Aura Sphere today?

Cetitan is back for another round. It still has "Ice Spinner" iconIce Spinner for STAB and to eliminate terrain effects, Ice Shard to try and go first, and "Liquidation" iconLiquidation to pester Fire and Rock types. In addition, it can use Bounce to leap into the air and deter Fighting types.

Send it spinning with a strong Steel type.

Weavile

"Weavile" IconWeavile is a new addition to Grusha’s team. It can use Night Slash and "Ice Punch" iconIce Punch for STAB, plus "Shadow Claw" iconShadow Claw and "X-Scissor" iconX-Scissor for extra coverage.

Fighting types are its bane. Fire, Rock and Steel types should also do fine.

Terastallized Altaria

Altaria actually survived a hit, but its Hurricane missed…

To finish off, Grusha will Terastallize his "Altaria" IconAltaria, changing it into a pure Ice type. However, it’ll retain its Dragon and Flying STAB.

For attacks, it has "Ice Beam" iconIce Beam, "Dragon Pulse" iconDragon Pulse and "Hurricane" iconHurricane for STAB, plus Moonblast to scare Fighting types.

This calls for a reliable Fire, Rock or Steel type.
