Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Water Gym Test: Make the Winning Bid at the Auction

By
Shane Williams

This page offers a guide on how to beat the Water Gym Test in Cascarrafa in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and make the winning bid at the auction.

Gym Test: Make The Winning Bid.

How to Start the Water Gym Test in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

The Water Gym can be found in Cascarrafa. To get there, you’ll want to fast travel back to Cortondo (Bug Gym), and follow the road heading west out of the town. This road is windy and will lead you to West Province (Area One). Use the bridges to cross the river. Then once you’ve crossed the river for the second time, follow the road all the way northeast to Cascarrafa.

You’ll want to tackle the [Water Gym](Water Gym once you’re around Level 31, as the Pokemon inside will be around level 29-30. Additionally, you’ll want to make sure you have at least some Grass Grass and Electric Electric Pokémon in your team as they’ll do x2 damage. In order to start the Gym Challenge you’ll want to enter the Water Gym Building and speak with the woman at the counter, then she’ll inform you that you need to find Kofu and return his wallet to him as a part of your Water Gym Test.

Where To Find Kofu

Kofu is currently in Porto Marinada, so you’ll want to exit the Water Gym and head east, then follow the path down. Here you’ll find Kofu inside the market area, but before you can return his wallet you’ll need to face off against Gym Trainer Hugo who is Kofu’s apprentice.

How To Beat Gym Trainer Hugo

Pokemon Level Type
"Floatzel" IconFloatzel 28 Water
"Clauncher" IconClauncher 28 Water

Both of Gym Trainer Hugo’s Pokemon are Water Water Type, so you’ll ideally want to be using one of Grass Grass and Electric Electric due to the x2 damage they’ll do towards his Pokemon. If you chose the Grass-type starter, your Floragato (1st evolution of Sprigatito) will be a great choice for this battle and you’ll want make use of the following attacks: "Seed Bomb" iconSeed Bomb or Flower "Trick" iconTrick.

If you didn’t pick up the Grass-type starter, then you should consider using "Luxray" IconLuxray, Pawmi, "Gogoat" IconGogoat or "Breloom" IconBreloom which you should’ve seen plenty of by this point of the game. As long as you’re hitting his Pokemons elemental weakness and topping up your health, then the battle shouldn’t cause too much of an issue if you’re around its level range.

How to Make the Winning Bid in the Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Auction

Once you’ve defeated Gym Trainer Hugo you’ll finally be able to return Kofu’s wallet to him, then he’ll mention that he wants to get his hands on the Legendary Wakame Seaweed from the Hoenn Region from the nearby auction. Here Kofu will provide you with 50,000 Poke Dollars to use in a Pokémon Scarlet & Violet auction. However, you’ll want to try and play it safe as any funds left over will go into your pocket.

(1 of 2) Wait for the others to make their bid

Wait for the others to make their bid (left), then increase in 5k increment (right)

The auction will begin at 10,000 Poke Dollars, so you’ll want to start off with “Don’t Bid yet” and wait for the other to place their bid so you can make a more calculated decision. Depending on their bids you’ll want to increase it by 5k, so if they bidded 25,000 Poke Dollars you’ll want to choose 30,000 Poke Dollars. Keep increasing it by 5,000 until seaweed is sold, then the Gym Test will be completed.

After The Gym Test

Once you’ve defeated Gym Trainer Hugo and won the auction, the test will be completed. Now, you’ll want to return to the Water Gym to battle Kofu. If you need guidance on how to defeat this gym leader, then refer to our How to Defeat Water Gym Leader Kofu page.
