Assassin's Creed: Valhalla

How to Use the Rune Forge

By
Scott Peers

This page details everything you need to know about how to use the new Rune Forge building at your Ravensthorpe settlement. We’ll cover how many Foreign Supplies you’ll need to construct the building and where to find them. We’ll also explain the types of runes that you can extract from specific armor and weapons, and how you can slot them into different items.

Rune Forge Building, AC Valhalla.

How to Build the Rune Forge

You’ll find the Rune Forge in the eastern part of Ravensthorpe, just up the hill from Hildiran’s Hut. You’ll need 600 Foreign Supplies to construct the building, which you can earn from raiding throughout England. If you’ve already raided everything in the base game, you can go raiding in one of the River Raids to loot more supplies.

Speak with Hauk to Forge New Runes

How the Rune Forge Works

Once you’ve built the Rune Forge, you’ll be able to speak with Hauk, who dwells in and around the building. He’ll tell you a bit about the services he offers, but the main thing you need to know is that you can only apply runes of a specific type to the same type of armor or weapon that they came from. For example, if you want to extract a rune from a chest piece of armor, you can only apply that rune to other chest pieces, rather than to boots or gloves.

What Are Hauk’s Runes Used For?

The runes that Hauk offers to extract from your armor aren’t the same as ordinary runes that you acquire from general looting in the game. Instead, they are essentially the set modifiers associated with specific pieces of armor, or the special default modifiers present on weapons. These are modifiers that can’t be removed from the weapon or armor, but you can now extract them as runes to apply to other items.

A good example of this is the incredibly powerful special modifier that comes with Mjolnir, Thor’s hammer, which ensures that: “Every melee hit has a chance to do Stun Damage to all enemies around”. If you haven’t found or used Mjolnir yet, see our page on How to Get Thor’s Hammer (Mjolnir). The stun damage effect essentially creates explosive damage from lightning, and this occurs more often that you might think in every fight, making it one of the most powerful weapons against multiple enemies.

Having access to the Rune Forge means that you can now extract this powerful special modifier which was previously bound only to Mjolnir, and apply it to any melee weapon of your choice. The best part of this is that you can still keep the original special modifier of the weapon that you’re applying it to, creating opportunities for incredibly powerful weapons of legend. For example, if you slot Mjolnir’s rune (known as the Stunning Burst Rune) into Excalibur, you will not only have the chance to stun enemies around you with each hit, but you’ll also have Excalibur’s special modifier which blinds enemies all around whenever you score a Critical Hit or use a Heavy Finisher.

(1 of 3) You’ll need 600 Foreign Supplies to build the Rune Forge, which you an acquire from River Raids.

These two runes together have the potential to create a weapon that can make short work of any group of enemies, potentially keeping them stunned and immobile for most of a fight. This is just one example of how you can combine unique special modifiers in the form of extracted runes from specific weapons, with other powerful modifiers on already powerful weapons. There are far more combinations that we need list here, but you can pick and choose your favourite weapons and runes to create something truly special. The only limiting factor is that you can’t mix and match different types of runes, so you won’t be able to apply a weapon rune to an armor piece, and vice versa.
