Black Myth: Wukong

Kun Steel Locations

By
Ben Chard

As you reach the final stages (and beyond) of Black Myth: Wukong, you’ll need mythical materials to craft some of the best gear the game has to offer. When it comes to weapons, "Kun Steel" iconKun Steel is the rarest in the game, and there are only a few instances of it on any given playthrough. Keep reading to learn where you can find all of them!

Kun Steel is needed to forge the best weapons in Black Myth: Wukong.

Where to Find Kun Steel

As mentioned above, Kun Steel is the highest-tier weapon crafting material in Black Myth: Wukong, and as such, you’re going to have to do specific tasks to get your hands on it. Unlike many of the other materials you may have used before, such as Fine Gold Thread and Cold Iron Leaves, you won’t be able to farm Kun Steel, so you’re going to need to go out and defeat the specific bosses that drop this exceedingly rare material.

As such, there are six Kun Steel you can obtain in any given playthrough (of what we’ve found so far), those are as follows:

  • Complete the Loong Scales Quest that starts in Chapter 2. The final Loong, "Yellow Loong" iconYellow Loong, drops a Kun Steel

  • Unlock the Chapter 4 Secret Area and defeat "The Duskveil" iconThe Duskveil

  • Defeat "Hundred-Eyed Daoist Master" iconHundred-Eyed Daoist Master at the end of Chapter 4

  • Open a chest near the Flaming Mountains Shrine in Chapter 5

  • Defeat "Yaksha King" iconYaksha King at the end of Chapter 5

  • Defeat the secret boss at the end of Chapter 3’s Secret Area (which requires you to beat the game first). This is the hardest boss in the game.

The earliest you can get your hands on some Kun Steel is by completing the "Loong Scales" iconLoong Scales Questline that starts when you find the Key Item in Chapter 2. You’ll need to defeat Red Loong (Chapter 1), "Black Loong" iconBlack Loong (Chapter 2), and the "Cyan Loong" iconCyan Loong (Chapter 3) before you can find the Yellow Loong at the Relief of the Fallen Loong Shrine in the Webbed Hollow. The Yellow Loong is a tough battle, but persist and you’ll be rewarded with not only some Kun Steel, but also the "Sea-Supporting Tendon" iconSea-Supporting Tendon which is needed alongside two Kun Steels to craft the "Golden Loong Staff" iconGolden Loong Staff! Additionally, both the final bosses of Chapters 4 and 5 will drop a single Kun Steel upon their defeat, as such, you cannot miss either of these.

If you’ve run into the "Venom Daoist" iconVenom Daoist multiple times and unlocked the way to the Secret Area of Chapter 4, Purple Cloud Mountain, you can run into The Duskveil at the end of it. This is another challenging optional boss, but if you beat it, you’ll be awarded with another Kun Steel.

(1 of 2) Defeating the difficult Yellow Loong can be done as early as Chapter 4.

There is one Kun Steel you can obtain without having to defeat a boss, and that can be found in Chapter 5. Continue through the Chapter until you reach the Furnace Valley - Valley Entrance Shrine and follow the path until it opens up. Drop down below (but equip the "Fireproof Mantle" iconFireproof Mantle) and run across the lava to the right and follow it all the way to the end to find a hidden chest. You cannot obtain this without the Fireproof Mantle from the Chapter 1 Secret Area as that will prevent you from taking damage while on lava.

The final Kun Steel is perhaps the toughest in the game, you’ll need to unlock the Chapter 3 Secret Area, Wei Mountain, and defeat the optional superbosses at the end. These are considered the toughest battles in the game and will unlock the secret ending once you defeat the final boss again. Still, if you’re planning on a New Game+ run, be sure to pocket this final Kun Steel before you head into the next cycle!
