While Stat Growth Rate will determine how likely you are to accumulate stat points when leveling up, stat caps determine how high each stat can be. The former are mostly a function of the character’s innate proclivities, modified by their current class, but the latter is almost exclusively determined by your current class (with a few points added or subtracted from various stats, depending on the character). This page will cover the stat caps for each class and each character’s minor variations on these stat caps.
All Stat Caps by Class in Fire Emblem Engage¶
A character’s current class almost entirely determines their stat caps, and hence, their ultimate effectiveness in battle. The difficulty you’re playing on and your playstyle will influence what matters more; if you are playing on higher difficulties, have fixed stat growths per level up, or otherwise can’t (or don’t want to) grind, growth rates are quite important, as there’s no point in having a stat cap of 50 if your growth rate is so low that you’ll be lucky to see that stat hit 20 by the time you’ve reached the end of the game. On the other hand, if you’re playing more casually and/or willing to grind out a lot of Skirmishes, you can eventually make Boucheron a decent spellcaster. Class-based stat caps have a democratizing effect on builds, with personal skills and unique class skills serving as one of the few tie-breakers for power-gamers.
All Stat Caps by Base Class in Fire Emblem Engage¶
Characters usually start out as some base class or another, which have surprisingly good stat caps. Not quite as good as the equivalent advanced class, but not as far behind as you’d think… While you could technically remain a base class the whole game (perhaps using Second Seals to keep resetting your level and hence keep growing your stats), the fact that advanced classes do have higher stat caps, growth rates, and access to more and/or higher grade weapons means you’ll use a Master Seal to promote out of an base class and never have a solid gameplay reason for switching back. The list of stat caps by base class include Special Class like the Thief and Dancer:

All Stat Caps by Advanced Class in Fire Emblem Engage¶
Most characters will want to end up an advanced class at some point, as they boast higher stat caps (although not as much higher as you may think…), growth rates, class skills (learned at Lvl 5) and access to more or higher grade weapon options. It’s worth noting that virtually every unique class (for example, Dragon Child and Divine Dragon are unique to Alear) has identical stat caps between their base class and advanced class. Odd.

All Stat Caps by Character in Fire Emblem Engage¶
Compared to the uneven balance of class and character when it comes to stat growths, it’s somewhat surprising how little a character influences each stat’s cap compared to their current class. This is almost never going to be a deciding factor when it comes to how you should build a character - at most you’re looking at a six point swing between two characters, but this is incredibly rare, and requires you to max both character’s stats out to even see it. A character with a -3 stat cap in a stat is almost certainly going to have a terrible growth rate in that stat, and if you’re grinding up enough to get an unsuitable character’s poorest stats maxed, you’re probably not terribly worried about power-gaming and balance. Still, below you’ll find a list of how each character influences the stat caps of whatever class they’re currently employed as - these numbers are added or subtracted from the class stat caps, above.
