Metaphor: ReFantazio

Junah Bond Unlock Guide: Abilities and Archetypes

By
Ben Chard

Much like its inspiration in Persona 5, Metaphor: ReFantazio has a Follower system with over 14 characters to find and befriend. While not all of them are simple to unlock, many are the party members you will encounter and Junah is one such character you’ll meet many times before she finally joins the Protagonist. Keep reading to learn how to rank up Junah and what abilities and Archetypes she unlocks.

Everyone’s favorite Songstress Junah awakens the Masked Dancer Archetype in Metaphor: ReFantazio.

Unlocking the Junah Follower Bond

Junah will first start showing up as you depart for the Tournament for the Throne before appearing with Louis. As the story unfolds, she’ll eventually join the party shortly after the events of the third operation. Unlike the previous four party members, you will not unlock Junah’s Bond automatically (even if you will gain access to her Archetype before then), you’ll instead need to complete a Quest.

During the free time on 8/19, you’ll be tasked with creating the Potion of Blight to access the Dragon God Temple, be sure to do this (as it doesn’t take up any of your time) and then once acquired, you’ll find Junah standing nearby with the Save the Mourning Snakes Side Quest. This tasks you with traveling to and completing the Orbwise Path labyrinth nearby which ends with a boss battle against the Lv 42 Kokasadors, a cockatrice weak to Fire. Defeat it and the quest will end, unlocking Junah’s Bond in the process.

(1 of 2) You will need to complete the Save the Mourning Snakes quest to unlock Junah’s Bond.

Junah Rank up Events and Abilities

There is a total of eight Rank Up events for Junah and as mentioned above, all of them are optional (including unlocking the Bond). The table below will detail how to get each Rank for Junah and the ability it unlocks.

Rank Conditions Abilities
1 Complete the Save the Mourning Snakes Side Quest from 8/19 Masked Dancer Archetype
2 Speak to Junah on a free day, at night Masked Dancer Enlightenment (decreases MAG cost to study), Triumphant Hymn (everyone recovers a bit of MP after battle)
3 Speak to Junah on a free day, at night (after waiting at least one full free day first) Scion’s Skill (Masked Dancer Skill Inheritance Slots to 2), Battle Aura (increases exp in reserves)
4 Speak to Junah on a free day, at night (after waiting at least one full free day first) Masked Dancer Veneration (significantly decreases MAG cost to study)
5 Speak to Junah on a free day, at night (after waiting at least one full free day first). Requires Imagination Rank 4 Scion’s Merit (Masked Dancer Skill Inheritance Slots to 3)
6 Speak to Junah while traveling on the Gauntlet Runner following the previous event Masked Dancer Archetype: Elite (Unlocks Persona Master)
7 Speak to Junah on a free day, at night (after waiting at least one full free day first) Battle Hypnosis (earn EXP in reserves at normal rate)
8 Speak to Junah on a free day, at night (after waiting at least one full free day first) Scion’s Essence (Masked Dancer Skill Inheritance Slots to 4), Heroes’ Hymn (Increases MP recovery after battle), Grand Fantasy (Unlocks Royal Masked Dancer)

Junah’s Bond is the first party member one that requires you to complete a Side Quest to even unlock it. Beyond that, other than requiring Imagination Rank 4 for Bond Rank 5, all of her events are rather simple, requiring you to visit her at night for each of them. You will have to speak to her while traveling on the Gauntlet Runner for one event, but beyond that, you can easily rank up her Bond for the most part.

Rank 1 Ability - Masked Dancer Archetype

Alongside the next party member, Eupha, Junah’s Archetype Tree is one of the most unique ones in Metaphor: ReFantazio and is full of Persona references. When you visit More in Akademia, you’ll notice there’s a new option to synthesize new Masks based on every Archetype in the game. Junah then equips these Masks in her accessory slot and she gains access to three skills from that Archetype on top of her other Masked Dancer skills. This makes the Masked Dancer incredibly versatile and a great contender for a permanent spot in your party at all times.

Rank 2 Abilities - Masked Dancer Enlightenment and Triumphant Hymn

Much like the Enlightenment abilities for the other Bonds, this will decrease the cost of studying Masked Dancer Archetypes. Even though there are only two Archetypes in this tree, they’re expensive to study so this is useful to make this more manageable.

Triumphant Hymn is a very useful ability for dungeons and a good reason why you should get Junah to Rank 2 as soon as you can. After battle, everyone in the party will recover some MP, it’s not a lot, but it all adds up quickly, especially if you’re able to end battles without expending too much in the first place.

Rank 3 Abilities - Scion’s Skill and Battle Aura

Scion’s Skill is the first in the series of Scion abilities that grant you an extra Inheritance Slots. While this isn’t as useful for the Masked Dancer due to their ability to change Masks for more abilities, it can give you even more skills to play with, such as adding skills like Dekunda or Dekaja to your list.

As Junah is the fifth party member to join, you’re ultimately going to have to leave at least one member in the reserves, where they will gain less EXP than the main battle party. The Battle Aura ability will ensure that you gain a bit more EXP when in those reserves so consider keeping Junah in your main party until you at least unlock this ability.

Rank 4 Ability - Masked Dancer Veneration

This is the upgrade to Masked Dancer Enlightenment ability that decreases the cost of MAG to study the Archetypes here. The Elite Archetype for Masked Dancer is very expensive, so decreasing that cost a bit is massively helpful.

Rank 5 Ability - Scion’s Merit

The second in the Scion’s series of abilities, this one will give you three Skill Inheritance slots for any Masked Dancer Archetype. With this, you can now make any Masked Dancer massively versatile and cover most bases.

(1 of 2) You can craft and equip Masks to the Masked Dancer to use skills from other Archetypes.

Rank 6 Ability - Masked Dancer Archetype: Elite

Seeing as the Masked Dancer is a huge reference to Persona, it’s only fitting that the Elite of this Archetype Tree is in fact, the Persona Master. You’ll still be able to use all those excellent Masks, but now, you’ll gain access to powerful dances that can give enemies Weaknesses for a turn (which is useful against some of the toughest bosses in the game) while you’ll also get access to the Masquerade Charge Synthesis Ability that greatly increases the entire party’s physical attack once per battle!

Rank 7 Ability - Battle Hypnosis

Just like Battle Aura before it, this is another ability that will ensure that whenever Junah isn’t in the main battle party, she’ll still earn EXP at the same rate as anyone in the main party. Seeing as there are a total of seven party members in Metaphor: ReFantazio, this makes it so Junah won’t be underleveled.

Rank 8 Abilities - Scion’s Essence, Heroes’ Hymn, and Grand Fantasy

Scion’s Essence is the final Scion ability, bringing you up to four skills you can inherit on Masked Dancer Archetypes. Heroes’ Hymn is the upgrade to Triumphant Hymn, further increasing the MP the party will recover after every battle, this will make your dungeon runs much more manageable and save precious MP healing items.

Grand Fantasy will remain a mystery to you until the events on 9/23, where you’ll then gain access to the Royal Archetypes, for which Junah’s will be the Royal Masked Dancer. This isn’t as great an investment to unlock as Heimsay and Hulkenberg’s, but it will require you to max out the Trickster (the Elite Archetype of the Faker) alongside Persona Master to get access to it. The Royal Masked Dancer makes what is already one of the best Archetypes in the game even better, giving you some new Masks to create from More and gives you access to two of the best passives in the game, increasing your magic attack by 25% and preventing any Turn Icons to be spent if you kill an enemy with any magic!

There you have it; all of Junah’s Bonds and Abilities in Metaphor: ReFantazio. While you can have Junah take on any Archetype, keeping her in the excellent Masked Dancer Archetypes is the ideal route, just remember to spend time in Faker and Trickster so you can unlock Royal Masked Dancer near the end of the adventure. If you want to make Junah even more powerful from this point, consider jumping into the Mage Tree.
