Metaphor: ReFantazio

Zorba Boss Guide

By
Jarrod Garripoli

There are a plethora of bosses in Metaphor: ReFantazio, so you’re going to be doing a lot of battling against formidable foes. Once you make it through the long and grueling Regalith Grand Cathedral dungeon, you will have to face one of Louis’ men, the necromancer Zorba. This fight can be quite annoying, due to Zorba doing necromancy things.

You will fight Zorba at the top of the Grand Cathedral.

All of Zorba’s Attacks

Zorba has a few attacks of his own, but he does do a lot of summoning undead throughout the fight.

  • Corpse Puppetry: Zorba will conjure a Corpsethrall into the battle. He can only have two up at once. They will get their own actions each turn.

  • Mudoon: A dark-elemental attack on a single character. It’s unclear if this has a chance to instantly kill someone or not.

  • Bondage Curse: Doesn’t do any damage, but will inflict Paralysis on a character.

  • Madness Curse: Zorba will cast this on the Corpsethralls, inflicting Rage on them. This makes them stronger, but they take more damage from all attacks. He only uses this when there are two Corpsethralls on the field.

(1 of 5) Zorba will spend a lot of time summoning Corpsethralls into the battle.

  • Kandera: This is a single-target electric spell. Not much more to say about this.

Zorba Boss Strategy

As you already know, Zorba is a necromancer and of course, he will be using that black magic throughout the entire fight. If Zorba is alone, then it’s guaranteed that he will use his turns to perform Corpse Puppetry, which will summon a Corpsethrall. These undead don’t do anything special but their normal attack, and they are weak to both fire and light attacks. Should you have the Dragon’s Indignation sword and have upgraded it at the church, then its normal attacks will be fire-based, so you can save MP by simply using that on the undead.

Zorba will typically always try to summon two Corpsethralls before doing any other attack. The problem that arises is that if you strictly stick to the undead, then you won’t likely be able to damage Zorba himself. If you brought a Healer into the fight, though, the undead can exploit its Strike-based weakness with their normal attacks. One thing you definitely don’t want to do is give more actions to Zorba and his shambling corpses. Some skills he does when he’s actually directly attacking you include Mudoon and Kandera.

You might see him use Bondage Curse, which can inflict paralysis on one of your characters. So, if you can remove it, then make sure you do that, as paralyzed characters will mostly be useless. When there are two Corpsethralls on the field, Zorba will usually begin using Madness Curse on them. This inflicts Rage on the undead minions, so they will start hitting your characters a lot harder, but the upside is they’ll be easier to kill, since they take more damage. The biggest part of this whole fight is striking a balance in attacking Zorba, while also controlling the Corpsethralls.

(1 of 5) Madness Curse will inflict Rage on the Thrall it’s used on.

As for Zorba himself, he doesn’t have any siginificant weaknesses, but he is going to be resistant to the four main elements (fire, ice, lightning, and wind). Being a necromancer, naturally he isn’t going to take damage from dark, but you don’t really have a great source of that damage at this point. You are able to use light damage on him, and considering the undead are also weak against it, that makes Hama a great spell to have for this battle (best to inherit it).

For defeating Zorba, you will receive an Energy Incense. Unfortunately, he has one last trick up his sleeve, in the form of a spell, which will resurrect the Human down in the courtyard. You will be in the lobby after the scene there, so exit it to be thrown straight into the next boss, against the Homo Avades.
