Once you’ve gotten your fifth gym badge from Hearthome City, you’ll head all the way to Canalave City in Pokémon Brilliant & Shining Pearl
Main Story¶
When you arrive in Canalave City, head up and to the bridge that crosses to the west. This is where you’ll find the Gym.
Before you can go across and beat the Gym Leader, however, a rival battle will be triggered as your friend barrels along the bridge towards you. Make sure you heal up before starting to cross this bridge.
Chimchar Starter¶
Piplup Starter¶
Turtwig Starter¶
Your rival is definitely growing stronger by this point - but so have you. As long as you’ve chosen your team carefully and been pretty diverse with your types, you shouldn’t have too much trouble with this one.
Heal up and head on over the bridge to meet Gym Leader Byron and his trainers. They mostly use Steel-type Pokémon, and it’s recommended to be aware of this when sending your Pokémon out. Fire and Fighting-types do great here, so if you chose Chimchar as your starter and are now holding a Monferno or even an Infernape, you’re in luck!
Defeating Byron will allow the use of Hidden Move Strength outside of batte.
After defeating Byron, you’ll meet your rival in the library and find him there with Professor Rowan. An earthquake will rumble, and you’ll be asked to go investigate at each of the lakefronts.
Items¶
Before moving on, there are a few items to be found here.
Poké Mart¶
As ever, there’s a Poké Mart. However, now that you have a few badges, a few more items will be unlocked for you.
Item | Price |
---|---|
Poké Ball | 200 |
Great Ball | 600 |
Potion | 300 |
Super Potion | 700 |
Antidote | 100 |
Paralyze Heal | 200 |
Awakening | 250 |
Burn Heal | 250 |
Ice Heal | 250 |
Escape Rope | 550 |
Repel | 350 |
Super Repel | 500 |
Other Items¶
There are also some other items to be found around the city.
Item | Location |
---|---|
TM48 Skill Swap | The bottom right house |
TM89 U-Turn | The bottom left corner of the city |
Pearl | Close to the ship that heads for Iron Island |
To reach TM89 U-Turn, however, you’ll have to find the secret path in the city. You can access this by heading to the dock on the bottom left of the city and instead of talking to the man, using Surf below him. You can then Surf down to the secret path.
Other Locations¶
There are two other main locations you might want to visit before moving on.
The first is the house on the top right of the city, where you will find the Move Deleter. If you want to get rid of some moves for your Pokémon, this is where you can go to do so.
The second is the ship that sails to Iron Island. Here, you can train up against Ground and Steel-type Pokémon, which will help if you’re struggling with the gym in this city. It may be a tricky one if you picked Piplup or Turtwig for your starter and don’t yet have a good counter.
