The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

A Greedy God

Mysterious, supernatural, primeval forces abound in Velen, and its rural communities are only too eager to venerate these beings. Superstitious by nature, the isolation and poverty of Velen’s peasantry magnify the unequal nature of these interactions - in the case of malign forces, no help is likely to arrive, while the miserable existence eked out by these poor swamp-dwellers often leads them to seek succor wherever they can find it. It’s a situation ripe for exploitation, and some otherwise benign monsters find themselves incapable or unwilling to pass up the opportunity. This page will provide a walkthrough for the secondary quest "A Greedy God" iconA Greedy God in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Quest Objectives

Starting A Greedy God

Before you can start this quest you must have completed Wandering in the Dark, as the "Eye of Nehaleni" iconEye of Nehaleni is required to make any meaningful progress. If you haven’t completed "Wandering in the Dark" iconWandering in the Dark yet, this quest will simply not show up. That out of the way, along the road south of Wastrel Manor, northwest of Oreton, you’ll find some brick ruins, where two peasants - Preben and Dagmar - are arguing over the flawed offerings they made. Talk to them and they’ll tell you that an inflexible “Allgod” has cursed them in response to this blasphemy, but as a poor rural village suffering even deeper poverty than usual, they simply can’t offer more. Geralt, sensing an unvoiced plea, preemptively offers to intervene on behalf of the peasants and speak to this Allgod.

Approach some ruins and you’ll see two peasants arguing over some subpar offerings.

Find the Allgod

In the midst of the ruins, southeast of where the peasants stand, you’ll find a wooden statue surrounded by candles. In fact, the sheer amount of candles littering these ruins… well, it can’t be cheap. It certainly doesn’t seem to be a lack of devotion that’s causing the peasants to neglect their deity, but rather a lack of calories. Interact with the statue and sure enough, Geralt will hear the Allgod speak, and it’s more interested in threatening diving retribution than hearing excuses. Geralt’s no dumb hayseed, however, and realizes this is a very real voice coming from underground, not something divine.

Search some drained wine bottles near the statue, then use your Witcher sense to follow a scent trail back northwest, around a ruined brick wall, where you’ll find some odd rocks littering the ground, looking rather out of place among all the brickwork. Use the Eye of Nehaleni (Geralt might have commented on these rocks as you approached the peasants) and the rocks will be dispelled, revealing some stairs leading below ground. Head downstairs and you’ll find the source of the statue’s voice - a rather corpulent Sylvan.

(1 of 4) Agree to intervene on the peasant’s behalf and talk to a statue,

Talk to this “Allgod” and you’ll get several choices: pick a fight, force the greedy monster to take less food, or abandon the effort. Whichever choice you pick (covered individually, below) you’ll get 25 EXP for talking to the Allgod.

Refuse to Intervene

If you pick the option “Fine. I’ll tell them.” Geralt will uncharacteristically accept the Allgod’s bogus argument that its “services” warrant the obscene compensation its been gorging itself on. Leave the basement (be sure to loot the various chests and containers within, first!) and tell the peasants that their god is a harsh god, and will not accept lesser offerings regardless of the hardships the peasants are facing. Afterwards you can just leave things be by saying “Farewell.” or cause trouble by telling them about the basement (“Did you know there’s a crypt below?”.), which will cause the peasants to snoop around the stairs. Nothing will happen while you’re here, but if you leave and return some days later, the peasants will be gone and the stairs will be blocked again - this time by physical bricks, not by illusory rocks. Presumably the peasants were not amused by the visage of their Allgod and decided to inter the monster underground. In any event, the quest ends when you finish talking to the peasants, and you’ll earn 50 EXP for your efforts.

(1 of 2) Refuse to forcibly intervene and tell the peasants the decree of their inflexible god, after which you can tell them about the basement’s fascinating architecture.

Kill the Allgod

Faced with such ruinous gluttony, Geralt can opt to do what a Witcher does best;… no, not get seduced by sorceresses - kill monsters! Pick the option “Got an idea. I’m gonna kill you.” and you’ll provoke the Allgod’s wrath. The Allgod (Lv7) fights very similarly to a "Gargoyle" iconGargoyle, clumsily sweeping with its massive arms, performing stomp AoE attacks, throwing firebolts and breathing fire. It doesn’t help that this cellar is both confined and cluttered, which can make some of these attacks harder to dodge than they normally would be. Use the normal version of "Quen" iconQuen to protect yourself and whittle the Sylvan down with the strong attack-dodge routine, dodging far away if you see the Allgod lift his leg to stop or preparing to breathe fire. While there are tricky elements to this fight, the Allgod doesn’t have nearly as much health as a Gargoyle does, so at least it won’t be a long fight.

(1 of 2) If you pick a fight with the Allgod, use the strong attack-dodge combo to whittle it down,

Loot the cellar, then report back to the peasants who rather than being thankful for freeing them from this parasite, view the Allgod’s death as an ill omen they have to atone for. Some people are just born slaves. You’ll get 50 EXP for your efforts, along with whatever you plundered in the cellar.

Threaten the Allgod

Finally, if you say “Settle for humble offerings - or die.” Geralt will threaten the Sylvan and the creature will, when faced with a Witcher’s wrath, wisely choose to restrain its appetite. Temporarily. Loot the basement, then head back above ground and inform the peasants, who will reward you with 50 EXP and 50 "Crowns" iconCrowns. After this you can then leave the peasants to their own devices, or inform them of the basement, just as in the Refuse to Intervene route. The consequences are the same in the other aforementioned route, so do what you wish and either way the quest will end.

"Take the key and free a Merchant, who will tell you to meet him in Claywich, then loot the camp."

This merchant is bugged as hell: he might not show up in Claywich at all, or show, but you cannot speak to him. As a result, either you need to look for a save before completing this event and try again. Or, in my case, just walk with him to Claywich. And he is not marked on map. Stand near the mostwestern house.

"When you have that quest, play Gwent with the Trader"

For those who asked: guide suggested, that you play boatman much later.
