The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

How to Get the Hylian Shield in Tears of the Kingdom

By
Seren Morgan-Roberts

This page details how to find the Hylian Shield and how to obtain it again after it breaks in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (TOTK). You’ll find a detailed walkthrough on the shield’s exact location inside !Hyrule Castle.

Time to gear up in fashion with the old school Hylian Shield.

Where to Find the Hylian Shield - Hyrule Castle Docks Location

The "Hylian Shield" iconHylian Shield can actually be obtained easily and pretty much as soon as you arrive on the surface map after completing the tutorial (quite a bit trickier to get with only four hearts and a single wheel of stamina, but not impossible!). Before you head out in search for the Hylian Shield, make sure you either have arrows, a torch or something that can make fire!

Head to this opening on the northeast side (left), to find the docks beneath Hyrule Castle. (right)

The Hylian Shield is found in the surface portion of Hyrule Castle. More specifically, it can be found in the Hyrule Castle Docks location found on the northwest side of the surface level castle area. You can either reach the docks by paragliding down from the !Hyrule Castle sky location, or by sailing across the Hyrule Castle Moat.

Once at the docks, proceed across the piers and up the stairs. Some "Gloom Hand" iconGloom Hands will spawn on the docks, and unless you’re kitted out with Gloom Resistance or loads of hearts you probably don’t wanna have to deal with them. Especially since when you kill the Gloom Hands a "Phantom Ganon" iconPhantom Ganon will appear. If you really want the Hylian Shield at an early/mid-game level we definitely recommend just running past the Gloom Hands and keep running up the steps and out of a hole in the cliff side further on until they’ll eventually despawn. Once they’ve despawned, return inside and locate the large unlit brazier found on the upper floor overlooking the docks. !Light the brazier using your method of choice - if you have an arrow or torch you could light it on fire using the lit sconces nearby.

(1 of 3) Once at the docks, run away or defeat the Gloom Hands.

Once the brazier is lit, a chest containing the Hylian Shield will appear from the ground! The Shield boasts an impressive 90 Defense and will be an amazing addition to any player’s arsenal (provided you regularly block attacks!)

Is the Hylian Shield Unbreakable?

Unfortunately, this shield is not unbreakable, however, you can purchase the shield again from Cece’s Private Collection for 3,000 Rupees after completing The Mayoral Election Side Adventure in Hateno Village.

Starting the Mayoral Election in Hateno Village.

You can only have up to one Hylian Shield in your inventory at any given time and the shield won’t be available to purchase until you’ve found it in the wild! Head over to our guide on how to complete The Mayoral Election side adventure for more information.

You can also repair the shield before it breaks by feeding it to a Rock Octorok, which can be found around Death Mountain in the Eldin Region. This can be done with any weapon or shield and can be handy for special and rare equipment that you don’t want to break (like the Hylian Shield)!
