This page will detail how to start and complete the Casualty of War: The Brooch Favor in The Plains of Vanaheim in God of War Ragnarok.
Where to Start Casualty of War: The Brooch Favor in God of War Ragnarok¶
Before you can even begin this Favor, you will need to have completed the main quest, Creatures of Prophecy. Once you’ve done that, it will take you to the large optional area The Crater. This region of Vanaheim has three separate sub-areas, The Plains, The Jungle, and The Sinkholes. For this Favor, you’ll want to head to The Plains. The easiest way to get there is to head to The Jungle first, so you can complete the Favor “Return of the River”. This will let the river flow in the entire region again which makes navigating the place a lot more manageable because you’ll be able to use your boat.
From The Crater Entrance Mystic Gateway, grapple up the ledge to your north, and drop into the expansive area below. As soon as you drop, head northwest where you’ll find a large tree, and a small camp by the river. Go in-between the camp, and tree, and climb the ledge just past the boat dock. Here, you’ll find another large tree, and the spirit that starts this Favor will be to the right of it.
Where to Find the Other Half of the Brooch in The Plains¶
Teleport back to The Crater Entrance Mystic Gateway, grapple the ledge to your north, and drop into the expansive area below. As soon as you drop, turn east, and head south as soon as you can. Throw your axe at the Poison tree to your left, and follow the path to the left, and grapple the next ledge. If you haven’t been here before, you’ll have to defeat the miniboss, Egil The Oathguard, which you can read about below. After you’ve defeated Egil, you can find the other half of the brooch which glows in a brilliant purple overlooking the cliff to the southeast, to the right of the red chest.
How to Defeat Egil The Oathguard¶
Egil is a large husk of a man who yields a large shield, and a great sword. If he connects to you with the sword, he can deal a lot of damage. Thankfully, he’s on the slower side, which you can exploit. This is an unusual battle as Egil will turn his back to you while he hides behind his shield and slowly approaches you. When you see him in this stance, he will try to counter any attacks you make on him. What you want to do is head over to him, and get within melee range to bait out an attack. This will cause him to counter you. Dodge/parry the attack, and get a few attacks of your own in.
Most of Egil’s attacks will be either an overhead slam, a lunging thrust, or a wide swinging attack, most of which are reasonably slow, although the thrust is quick. For the Overhead Slam, and Thrust attacks, you’ll want to dodge to the side while the sweeping attacks can be blocked. One attack which can be tricky to deal with is his Spin to Win where he’ll spin around towards your location with his sword out. This is preceded with a yellow-ring, so you can parry them, but he’ll perform several strikes like this, and it’s best to just block everything other than the last swing as that will push you back.
The hardest part of this battle is dealing damage to him. This is where Rage, Relics, and Runic Attacks come in handy. Another great tip is to use any Realm Shift perk equipment you have as his attacks are quite easy to perfect dodge, and you’ll get a couple of seconds to attack him for free. Another great way to get a few hits is to parry the last hit of his Spin to Win attack. On harder difficulties, this battle is surprisingly tough, and you’ll need to be patient when fighting him as he doesn’t take a lot of damage. Defeating Egil will reward you with some crafting resource, and more importantly, a Folkvangr whetstone to upgrade Freya’s swords. Make sure you pick up “The Path of Lies” Lore scroll before leaving.
