Defeat the Flame Phantom boss |
How to Defeat the Flame Phantom Muspelheim Challenge in God of War Ragnarok¶
This Phantom challenge is appropriately named, since it consists of you fighting a Flame Phantom. This is similar to other Phantom boss fights that you’ve probably experienced in the game by this point, only this one generally inflicts more damage and it has a few extra attacks. The main principles of this fight are the same, though: hit the boss on its rune head until you completely fill its stun bar, then destroy the Springs / Obelisks on the edges of the arena to take a chunk of health from the boss. You then repeat this process until the boss has no health, at which point you can stun grab it to finish the fight.
In addition to fighting the Flame Phantom, there will be a number of Einherjar and Draugr enemies that spawn throughout the challenge. You’ll need to deal with these as soon as possible so that you can return to focus on avoiding the Flame Phantom attacks, while also inflicting stun damage on its rune head where possible. The Einherjar and Draugr are easy enough to deal with, but some of them are quite tough so you may need to use Runic Attacks to deal with them quickly. You should also remember to double tap when you see the concentric blue rings around them, since this is the only way to interrupt their special attacks.
Special Attack - Lava Eruption¶
The Flame Phantom will cause the ground to erupt with fire / lava when you’re at a distance from it. You will get some warning for this attack since it’s preceded by a red ring indicator, but so you should have plenty of time to dodge it. You won’t be able to block or parry this attack, but if you’re close enough to the boss you may be able to interrupt it with a well timed Runic Attack or Relic / Sword Hilt ability. This is the risker option, so just be ready to dodge it if nothing else.
Special Attack - Body Slam¶
The Flame Phantom has another special attack preceded by the red ring indicator, but this time within melee range. If you get too close to the boss when it’s not stunned, it will rise slightly before slamming its body down at you. This will cause flames to erupt which can inflict the burning status, so you need to be ready to avoid this with a quick dodge. The attack will often be used multiple times, so you’re not necessarily out of the woods after the initial dodge.
Special Attack - Tail Swipe¶
This one can easily catch you off guard if you’re not prepared. The best way to anticipate it normally is to look out for the yellow ring indicator as the boss rises slightly, in preparation for swinging its tail in a 360 motion. This attack has a surprising amount of reach, but you can dodge it reliably if you execute the dodge at the right time. To make things more complicated, the boss will sometimes executed this attack with no ring indicator to warn you, so you really do need to pay attention to its body movements.
Special Attack - Flame Wave¶
This is another attack that can be performed without warning, other than the boss rising slightly before launching a flaming wave at you. This will disperse in an arc in front of the boss, so you need to be ready to dodge just at the moment that it’s about to hit you to avoid it, or you can block it if you have the stone wall shield. It’s also possible to just run away from this attack, since it doesn’t have an infinite range, but this is usually more effort than it’s worth if you can just perform a quick dodge.
How to Destroy the Springs / Obelisks¶
Once you’ve done enough damage to completely fill the stun bar of the boss, it will hide underground for a short period of time. At this point you need to attack and destroy the Springs / Obelisks which are placed around the periphery of the arena. You can do this easily with a few Leviathan Axe throws, but if you can reach one in melee you might as well use melee combos to destroy it quickly. It’s possible to destroy two Springs / Obelisks in the same phase, but you’ll most likely only have time to destroy one before the boss pops back up. You will need to hit the boss on its rune head until the stun bar is filled and it hides underground again, then repeat the process of destroying the Springs / Obelisks until the boss has no health left.
The process of destroying the Springs / Obelisks is the only way in which you can inflict actual damage on the boss. Once the Flame Phantom has no health remaining, the next time it pops up you will be able to execute a stun attack to finish it off.
The Flame Phantom will become a lot more aggressive in the last quarter of this fight, so you need to be ready to avoid most of the attacks mentioned above in quick succession. Be sure to make use of Health Burst stones if you can find any on the battlefield, and use any abilities which can replenish health where necessary, such as the variants of Spartan Rage.
