There is a hidden Armor Set in God of War Ragnarok that goes by the name of Steinbjorn. This armor can only be obtained by finding the Mystical Heirloom Relic. This guide will show you where to find the Relic, and how to get the Steinborn Set.
Is the Steinborn Armor the Best?¶
There are a lot of great Armor Sets in God of War Ragnarok which all fit different play styles. The Steinbjorn set is more for a resilient build as it offers high Defense, and perks that reward you for getting hit. Combine the Set with some Regenerating Essence Enchantment, and you have the makings of a strong build which allows you to play more aggressively, and not die in two-hits.
Where to Find the Mystical Heirloom Relic¶
To craft the Steinbjorn Armor Set, you’ll have resources that can only be looted from specific trolls. However, before you can fight the trolls, you’ll need the Mystical Heirloom Relic to start the battle with them. The relic can be found in Midgard, and you’ll have to complete the story mission “Forging Destiny” to gain access to the Draupnir Spear.
With the Spear in hand, head over to the Lake of Nine in Midgard, and make your way to the south of Tyr’s Temple which is in the center of the area. In the frozen lake, you should spot a block of ice that is glowing a golden color. Throw your spear at it, and detonate it to destroy the ice. Go through the opening and pick up the Lore Scroll, and the Mystical Heirloom Relic next to the dead body.
Where to Find the Trolls¶
To craft the Armor, you’ll need four Slumber Stones, one for both the Wrist and Waist pieces, and two for the chest. Each troll will drop one Slumber Stones which means you need to defeat all four trolls to complete the set. You can get the set piece by piece, and you don’t need to wait until you have them all.
Troll Statue 1 - The Derelict Outpost, Midgard¶
Now that you have the relic, equip it in the relic slot, and head over to The Derelict Outpost, west of the relic. When you get there, follow the linear path until you reach the room with the Mysterious Gate. Climb the golden chain opposite it, and head west, past the Blacksmith. At the end of the path, turn south, and throw your axe at the crane until you can cross the gap in front of you. Grapple across, and do the same with the next crane. Once again, grapple across to go outside, and there will most likely be some random enemies here, defeat them, and prepare for the boss fight. Head straight forward, and you should notice a large statue to your left, activate the relic (press + ), and the statue will come to life.
How to Defeat the Troll Blodugr Steinn in Midgard¶
Meet Blodugr Steinn, this large creature has more bark than its bite, although when you get bit, the bite hurts. All the trolls act exactly the same, and that is to walk at you, and slam the stone pillar on your head. Thankfully, you can keep your distance indefinitely by throwing your spear at their head. This will cause them to flinch, slowing their progress towards you, although you may need to throw more than one spear to get this result.
When the troll gets near to you, and it will because of the layout of the area, it will try to slam the stone pillar at you. As it does this, dodge to the side, and run to the other end of the area, and continue to throw spears at its head. Combine the spear throwing with your companion’s skills to chip away at its health, and after a while due to its large health pool, it’ll die. Once it’s defeated, pick up the loot, and you’ll get a slumber stone among other useful stuff which is needed to craft the armor. Here are some tips for the fight:
- Keep your distance, and throw your spears at the troll’s head. If you have the Spear Drill skill (under the Ranged tree), use this instead as it’ll deal more damage, and you’ll get the same result.
- Make sure to detonate the spears (press/hold ) after five throws to deal extra damage.
- If you fight in melee range, the troll can blind you by throwing something in your eyes.
- While also fighting in melee range, the troll can spin around with its stone pillar out.
- Use rage if your health gets low or the troll is nearly dead.
Troll Statue 2 - The Forbidden Sands, Alfheim¶
The second statue can be found in Alfheim, more specifically, The Forbidden Sands. Teleport to the Hjarta Mysterious Gate, and exit to the southwest which will eventually head north. The statue can be found in the northwest corner of the area. It’s recommended that you complete the Favor “Song of the Sands” first to clear the area of the sandstorm otherwise it will make the fight harder than it has to be.
Head across the sand all the way west, and then head north. This area can be tough to spot at first, but you’ll know you’re in the right area if you see a fence made of branches. At the end of the fence, there is a passage you can go through, and straight in front of that, is a ledge you can grapple up to. This is where you’ll meet the Troll Bjarg Stormr.
How to Defeat the Troll Bjarg Stormr in Alfheim, The Forbidden Sands¶
This fight will be exactly the same as the one in Midgard, and the same principles apply. The only key difference here is the layout of the area as it’s not as long as The Derelict Outpost, but it’s a lot wider than it. Because you won’t have as much distance to the troll, you’ll have to dodge more often than the previous fight, but other than that, use the same strategy above. Once again, when it’s defeated, collect your loot, and make your way to the last area.
Troll Statue 3 and 4 - Noatunn’s Garden, Vanaheim¶
You may have read me saying the last area, and you’re probably thinking that you only have two trolls killed, so shouldn’t there be two more areas, but you’d be wrong. The last two trolls are together, and you’ll have to defeat both at the same time! First things first, make your way to Noatunn’s Garden in Vanheim. The easiest way to get there is to teleport to the River Delta Mysterious Gate, and row east, then north to reach the garden. Clear the area of any enemies first, and then head to the back of the area to the east where you’ll see two statues standing either side of the door. Activate the relic for the final battle.
How to Defeat the Trolls Golrab of the Ashes and Frost in Vanaheim, Noatunn’s Garden¶
Meet Golrab of the Ashes, and Golrab of the Frost. At first this fight may feel a little overwhelming, but the trolls still operate the same way, so you can continue throwing spears at their heads. The best way to deal with this battle is to try, and group up the trolls together by positioning yourself where they’ll both chase you, and then get some distance. For the rest of the battle, they will follow each other, and more importantly, you. Now, use the central building, and keep backing up, and run to get distance if they get too close, and continuously pelt them in their head with your spear. Have your companion use their skills off cooldown, and circle the building. This is where you have a choice, when the first troll flinches, target the second troll, and make that flinch or focus down one troll at the time. I preferred the second method, as the first was tedious, but it is effective.
Keep playing ring around the roses with them while you keep throwing your spear at their head, and before long, they’ll be dead. Collect the loot, and you’ll have all the Slumber Stones you need to craft the full set. Head to any Blacksmith, and craft your hard-earned armor.
Steinbjorn Armor Set Stats¶
The Steinbjorn Armor Set is a pretty tanky set that gives you high defense, and a bit of Strength. By reading the table below, you can see why the armor is called the de facto “tank” set. With a huge 394 defense at max rank AND you get some health back after taking significant damage, while also throwing some stun damage on top, you have a very strong set, and arguably the best in the game.
Armor | Minimum Attributes | Maximum Attributes |
---|---|---|
Steinbjorn Plackart (Chest) | Defense: + 123 | Defense: + 190 |
Steinbjorn Gauntlets (Wrist) | Defense: + 55 Strength: + 22 | Defense: + 85 Strength: + 34 |
Steinbjorn Waist Guard (Waist) | Defense: + 77 | Defense: + 119 |
Total | Defense: + 255 Strength: + 22 | Defense: + 394 Strength: + 34 |
Steinbjorn Armor Perks¶
Perk | Description |
---|---|
Bloodthirsty Retaliation | After significant damage is taken, Kratos’ attacks will restore some lost health for a time. |
Stunning Retaliation | Moderate Luck chance to stagger and inflict damage to nearby enemies when damage is taken. |
What makes the Steinbjorn Set so great, is that it rewards you for getting hit, and for the most part, you will be getting hit. The chest piece comes with Bloodthirsty Retaliation, which will make your attacks restore a small amount of health when you take a lot of damage. This is especially useful against bosses, and some harder enemies.
The Waist and Wrist pieces come with the Stunning Retaliation perk. Once again, you get rewarded by being hit, and this time you’ll have a moderate Luck chance to stagger and damage nearby enemies when you take any damage whatsoever. When you combine this set with the right enchantments, it really becomes a powerhouse.
