How to Complete the Ring of Fire Muspelheim Challenge in God of War Ragnarok¶
The Ring of Fire Muspelheim Challenge can be a tricky one, since it’s one of the few during which you’re not able to go completely mental with your attacks, killing all enemies as quickly as possible. Instead, you need to make sure that you kill all of the enemies within the ring, which is defined as any point where there isn’t lava burning you. This sounds simple enough, but you will need to contend with the fact that the Ring of Fire will move throughout the challenge, and your companion (whether Atreus or Freya) tends to enjoy fighting enemies in the burning lava, rather than within the relatively safe confines of the circle. This can make things much more difficult as you attempt to goad enemies within the circle, especially when they’re at critically low health.
Number of Enemies | Enemy Types |
---|---|
15 | Draugr, Wulvers, Dodher Wyvern |
To make things worse, there’s a point in the challenge arena where a poisonous totem is emitting a cloud of poison that has the potential to kill you within just a few seconds. You’ll soon reach this point when you move around the arena as the circle expands, contracts, and changes course. The best way to anticipate this is to throw your Leviathan Axe into the totem as soon as possible, then forget about using your axe to kill any of the enemies most of the time. You can leave your axe in the totem for the entire duration of the fight if you wish, but there will be points where you can use it at a safe distance from the totem. However, you will need to make sure that you don’t forget about the totem as you begin to move back around to it.
The Draupnir Spear and Blades of Chaos are perfectly good weapons to use during this challenge, but each come with the own potential downsides in terms of making it more likely that you accidentally kill enemies outside of the Ring of Fire. The Draupnir Spear has the potential to retain duplicates of itself in numerous enemies at once, and if you “pop” these spears by pressing , they could kill enemies when they’re outside of the ring. As a result it’s important that you avoid doing this unless you’re certain that all of the affected enemies will be within the ring when they die.
In terms of the Blades of Chaos, you can use these effectively at short range, but their long reach means that you need to be careful not to kill enemies outside the circle if they’re just on the edge of your reach. At the same time, they have the potential to inflict burning, which could slowly kill an enemy as they wander outside of the ring. You should try to avoid using any Runic Attacks which increase immolation or other types of damage over time for this reason, and instead rely on short, snappy attacks which are intended to finish off weak enemies within the ring.
If you’re a bit paranoid about accidentally killing enemies outside of the ring from the AoE with the Blades of Chaos, the Draupnir Spear provides excellent (mostly) single target damage. However, keep in mind that the spear is also capable of AoE damage, just within a smaller reach than the blades.
How to Kill the Draugr, Wulvers, and Dodher Wyvern¶
As shown in the table above, the enemies you’ll be facing during this challenge are Draugr, Wulver, and Dodher Wyvern. The Draugr are most easily killed since they have the least health and poor defences, while the Wulver and Dodher Wyvern are much tougher. You should only be facing one Dodher Wyvern towards the end of the challenge, and when it appears you should try to bring it down as quickly as possible. The Wyvern isn’t too difficult on the ground, but it can be a bit of a pain once it has free reign in the air. You can actually knock it out of the air by throwing a Draupnir Spear at it while the beast is flying towards you, so try to do this quickly to avoid being grabbed by the beast.
You’ll be facing numerous Wulvers alongside the Draugr, and we recommend saving your Runic Attacks or Relic / Sword Hilt abilities for these, so that you can eat through their greater health pools and higher defences. Most of the Draugr can be killed relatively quickly with a few melee combos, but you need to make sure that you kill them within the ring, so don’t go too crazy when trying to kill them while ignoring how the ring structure changes. Both the Draugr and the Wulvers are capable of using unblockable attacks which are preceded by a red ring indicator, so be ready to dodge away from these while blocking or parrying all other attacks.
The Dodher Wyvern is also different from the other two enemy types due to its ability to inflict Bifrost damage. This can become dangerous while you have multiple enemies running around, especially if you’re set on fire by the lava as the ring moves. One of the best ways to remove Bifrost if you’re caught by some of it is to use Spartan Rage. You don’t have to spend all of your rage, but only use it once to dispel the Bifrost if necessary. You can also try using the build shown in the table below for the Health Burst and Rage Burst perks that you acquire, which are extremely useful to keep you alive in tests of endurance such as this one.
Equipment | Type | Effect |
---|---|---|
Nidavellir’s Finest Plackart | Chest Armor | Stun Grabbing an enemy grants a Health Burst |
Nidavellir’s Finest Arm Guards | Wrist Armor | Reduces how quickly enemy Stun bars drain by 50% (100% with both pieces equipped) |
Nidavellir’s Finest Waist Guard | Waist Armor | Reduces how quickly enemy Stun bars drain by 50% (100% with both pieces equipped) |
Battle-Scarred Sauroter | Spear Handle | Stun Grabbing an enemy grants a Rage Burst |
Niflheim Amulet Enchantments x3 | Amulet Enchantment Set | Increases Kratos’ melee damage when he is above 75% health based on his Defence |

Regenerating Essence | Amulet Enchantment | Adds a small amount of constant health regeneration |
Greater Regenerating Essence | Amulet Enchantment | Adds a great amount of constant health regeneration |
The Nidavellir’s Finest Plackart and Battle-Scarred Sauroter Spear Handle are the two items which provide the perks, but all of the other gear enhances your ability to inflict stun damage, allowing you to utilize both perks more frequently. Just keep in mind that you need the Draupnir Spear equipped when executing a stun grab to make use of its Rage Burst perk.
