Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Spinning Gold from Grey

By
Nathan Garvin

During times of strife and turmoil, some are inclined to band together and work towards the common good, while others view the crisis as an opportunity to enrich themselves. The terrible setbacks suffered by the Grey Wardens at Weisshaupt and during the dragon attacks in the Hossberg Wetlands has left the venerable organization vulnerable indeed, and the allure of Grey Warden secrets and weapons are such that even the blight can’t deter some foolhardy looters. This page will provide a walkthrough for the side quest Spinning Gold from Grey in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

Page Breakdown

Starting Spinning Gold from Grey

Complete the main quest Fire and Ice, then return to the Hossberg Wetlands to find that new quests have opened up following the battle with Ghilan’nain’s dragons. Find a Grey Warden named Warden Sawyer in Lavendel, just outside of Grey Hold, northwest of the northernmost Lavendel fast travel beacon and he’ll bluntly tell you that mercenaries have decided it’s worth risking darkspawn and the blight to plunder "The Cauldron" iconThe Cauldron, and the Grey Wardens don’t have the manpower to repel them at the present. Given what you uncovered in The Cauldron, this can only end badly for everybody, and Rook decides it’s worth disciplining these mercenaries.

(1 of 2) After completing “Fire and Ice”, return to the Hossberg Wetlands and talk to Warden Sawyer to start this quest.

Defeat the Mercenary Groups

Not every quest needs to be complicated - some are little more than mere pest control, and these mercenaries definitely qualify as vermin. To get things started properly you’ll need to head to the Castle Grounds far to the southwest of Lavendel, but since you’ve already been there and almost certainly activated the Castle Grounds Beacon, you can save yourself a whole lot of time and effort by just fast traveling there.

Once you reach the beacon you’ll find yourself in the midst of three mercenary groups, all of which must be eliminated to complete the quest. The first group can be found southeast of the beacon, consisting of several Greater Mercenaries guarding a boat near a small dock. All of these are rather simple melee foes largely content to use the same two-stage attack, first a blockable attack, then an unblockable one. All the mercenaries you’ll face in this quest are weak to lightning and resistant to fire.

Dispatch the southeastern group near the dock, then climb back up to the beacon and head upstairs to the northwest to find the second group. This handful of mercenaries are also mostly Greater Mercenaries, but includes a Greater Assassin to spice things up a bit - this dual-dagger wielding foe is faster and more flighty than its companions, but no more dangerous for it.

Cull the second group and from where you fought them, climb a ladder to the left (southwest) to reach the interior of the castle, where the main body of mercenaries can be found. These include several more Greater Mercenaries, another Greater Assassin, three Greater Mages further back and a Wary Mercenary who serves as the group’s captain. The Greater Mages will happily pepper you from afar with trios of firebolts if you let them (along with the odd fireball), so you’d be wise to ignore the melee fodder and prioritize the mages if at all possible. The Wary Mercenary, despite its pretenses, is just a Greater Mercenary with more health, and as such shouldn’t pose much of a threat to you.

(1 of 4) Defeat the first group of mercenaries near a dock southeast of the beacon,

Defeat this third and final group of enemies, then fast travel back to Lavendel and report your deeds to Warden Sawyer to earn your reward: 500 EXP, 200 Gold, 5x Fade-Touched Ore, +100 Grey Wardens Strength and +100 Lords of Fortune Strength.
