Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Hauntings: Deadly Playtime

By
Nathan Garvin

When a demon possesses a mortal, the mortal’s form is often twisted into a hideous and dangerous abomination. While abominations are appropriately monstrous, demons aren’t required to manifest in such conspicuously loathsome forms, and the threat a demon poses is in no way mitigated by the form it adopts. The final “haunting” quest pits you against such an unconventional foe, and this page will provide a walkthrough for the quest "Hauntings: Deadly Playtime" iconHauntings: Deadly Playtime in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

Page Breakdown

Starting Hauntings: Deadly Playtime

Complete the main quest "Blood of Arlathan" iconBlood of Arlathan, then talk to Myrna in the Necropolis to start ["Hauntings: Feeling Scared?" iconHauntings: Feeling Scared?]. Once this fifth “haunting” quest is complete, talk to Myrna again and she’ll give you the sixth and final “haunting” quest, Hauntings: Deadly Playtime. When you’re ready to banish this final phantom, head to the northernmost of the two Central Market beacons and from there climb a ladder to the east, run down an alley, then jump a gap onto a roof to the east. Here you’ll find Death waiting for you.

Talk to Myrna after completing “Hauntings: Feeling Scared?” to start this quest.

Defeat Death

While its appearance may be silly - the spirit you’re hunting has possessed a candlehop, or all things - it did give itself the moniker of “Death”, and it will try to live up to it. Death will mostly only use two different attacks for the majority of the fight - it’ll conjured three icebolts above it and fire them off in succession. The first two are fairly standard, but the last bolt launches after a delay and shoots three bolts when it triggers. If you get hit by these you’ll be chilled and will quickly notice that Death packs one hell of a punch!

Its only other attack - at least at the beginning of the fight - is a teleport that creates an AoE burst when Death reappears. Just keep a lookout for the AoE reticle on the ground and avoid it, as Death will materialize there. Once Death is greatly injured (around 50% of its health bar) it may start creating a chain of AoEs along the path of its teleport. Only near the end of the fight will Death add a third attack to its repertoire - a series of AoE bursts similar to its teleport burst, sans the teleport itself.

Death has barriers and armor and a full health bar, and it constantly regenerates health, so it takes quite a lot of sustained offense to bring this foe down. It’s not terribly fast or dynamic, nor is its own offensive overwhelming or particularly difficult to avoid, but you can be lulled into a false sense of security, and if you do take a hit, Death’s damage output is quite scary. It’ll likely take only two or three hits to kill you, and if your offense isn’t up to snuff, Death’s regeneration will make this drag out a lot longer. Not a hard fight, if you’ve got the stats for it, but it can be a bit of an endurance trial.

(1 of 5) Death appears to shoot a standard ice bolt barrage, but it inflicts tremendous damage and its final bolt splits into three projectiles.

Defeat Death and you’ll get the standard 350 EXP as well as a chest containing gear (we got the "Watcher's Hold" iconWatcher’s Hold belt). Return back to Myrna and you’ll be given the "Deathrattle" iconDeathrattle unique medium helm for clearing the “hauntings” questline. In addition she’ll give you 500 gold and +250 Mourn Watch Strength.
