Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Hauntings: Feeling Scared?

By
Nathan Garvin

Scarecrows are inherently creepy - human effigies designed to scare off birds that might otherwise feed on seeds? It’s all in the name, really. Unfortunately spirits can possess all sorts of things in the mortal realm, and their lack of nuance and understanding can be just as dangerous as actively malevolent spirits. When it comes to spirits, a scarecrow is an accident waiting to happen, especially if a curious spirit emphasizes the “scare” bit more than the “crow”. This page will provide a walkthrough for the quest "Hauntings: Feeling Scared?" iconHauntings: Feeling Scared? in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

Page Breakdown

Starting Hauntings: Feeling Scared?

Complete the main quest "Blood of Arlathan" iconBlood of Arlathan, which starts out as Grim Bonds, the latter being more of a transitional/chatty quest that serves to get the former started. After escaping from Arlathan, you’ll be back at The Lighthouse - fast travel to the Necropolis and you’ll find that Myrna has new quests for you - namely this one. Talk to her and this quest will begin.

Fast travel to the Hossberg Wetlands and make your way east from Lavendel to the Old Crossroads. Your target, The Scarecrow, lurks in some ruins south of the Flooded Farmlands beacon and north of the Old Crossroads beacon.

Free the captive elves in Arlathan Forest during “Blood of Arlathan”, then talk to Myrna to start this quest.

Defeat The Scarecrow

Your target for this haunting is The Scarecrow, which fights very similarly to a Despair Demon in that it teleports around a lot, leaving frozen orbs in its wake that slowly home in on you (they can be safe destroyed with ranged attacks) and it’ll regularly unleash a polar ray at you, dealing massive damage if it connects and stacking chilled debuffs and dealing further damage if it remains in contact with you. Fortunately The Scarecrow doesn’t isolate Rook for stretches of time like Despair Demons do, but its other annoying traits make up for this.

While its polar ray is by far its most dangerous attack (moreso because it’ll use it more frequently than Despair Demons) it can also unleash force blasts, similar to the attacks some Champions unleashed. These deal little damage and The Scarecrow will stay stationary while it shoots, giving you plenty of time to interrupt it with an ability of your own. The Scarecrow can also summon a pack of Superior Shades, which are strictly melee combatants and not terribly durable, but The Scarecrow can summon them repeatedly throughout the battle. Otherwise you really only have to worry about The Scarecrow’s ability to heal itself by leeching life - pretty much any attack it lands will heal it, so sloppy play will make this take longer.

(1 of 4) The Scarecrow will summon Superior Shades regularly throughout the fight.

Defeat The Scarecrow and, if you brought Lucanis with you, he’ll inform you (via Spite) that The Scarecrow wanted you to “fly away” - its imperfect understanding of the mortal world turned it into a menace. You’ll get 350 EXP for defeating The Scarecrow, and you can loot a chest it drops to gain some gear (we got "The Iron Cast" iconThe Iron Cast heavy armor). When you report back to Myrna you’ll also be rewarded with 400 gold and +250 Mourn Watch Strength. She’ll also tell you about a final haunting, starting the quest ["Hauntings: Deadly Playtime" iconHauntings: Deadly Playtime].
