On Blighted Wings

By
Ben Chard

Following the events at the end of A Warden’s Best Friend, you’ll receive grim tidings, the gods have decided now is the time to test the resolve and strength of the forces of Thedas. As such, both Minrathous and Treviso are under attack, and Rook can only be one place at once. It is hear you make the major choice of which one to take, and if you chose to head to Minrathous, then you’ll undertake On Blighted Wings.

On Blighted Wings is a main quest in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

Starting On Blighted Wings

As mentioned above, once you reach the end of "A Warden's Best Friend" iconA Warden’s Best Friend, you’ll find yourself in The Crossroads as your allies rush to deliver the news of the gods assault. Both Treviso and Minrathous are under attack, and Lucanis and Neve are demanding The Veilguard take action in their chosen cities. Unfortunately, you can’t be everywhere at once, so you’re going to be forced to make a choice that will have massive ramifications for your playthrough. The spoiler box below will give you all the details on this choice:

Treviso or Minrathous Choice and ConsequencesShow Spoiler

Whichever city you neglect will have its major faction - the Shadow Dragons in Minrathous and the Antivan Crows in Treviso - decimated. They’ll still have some quests late in the game, as well as some unique quests covering the aftermath of the attack that will only occur if their city is neglected, but the intact faction will be the one to show up and provide assistance during major story events, flavoring the Veilguard alliance somewhat. The faction merchant for the neglected faction will die and you won’t be able to boost that faction’s strength by selling valuables to them anymore, and Neve or Lucanis will not be available as a companion for a few missions if their city was neglected. In addition, you will not be able to romance Lucanis if you do not choose Treviso.

You’ll have to decide between saving Treviso or Minrathous.

With that in mind, you’ll need to make your choice. Go with Lucanis to Treviso and you’ll begin the On Deadly Wings quest, or aid Neve and you’ll undertake On Blighted Wings, the quest this page covers.

Stop the Dragon

Once you regain control in Minrathous, you’ll find yourself in the Overlook of the city, with the dragon circling overhead. Your first task is to locate Neve somewhere on the streets, as such, you’ve only got one companion with you for now. Follow the path and slide down to and you’ll run into a group of Venatori who plans to stop you, this may be slightly trickier than usual due to your being down a companion, especially if you don’t have one who can heal (such as Davrin).

You’ll need to deal with the Venatori before you can meet up with Neve.

Once they’re defeated, break the crystals to continue along the rooftops and take the zipline down to meet up with Neve, who’s been assisting the Shadow Dragons with getting people to safety. Check her gear and then, when you’re ready, drop into the Andoralis Grounds to take out even more Venatori and shortly after, Ghilan’nain will show herself.

Boss: Seartooth Vyrantus

What may be a little unexpected at this stage of the adventure, you are going to go up against the Dragon that is terrorizing Minrathous, and you have little in the way to aid you. Fortunately, you don’t need to fully defeat the dragon here, just enough to repel it, which will happen around 75% health. Still, don’t take this for granted, Seartooth Vyrantus can kill you quickly if you’re not careful or struggle to dodge attacks (as Deflecting is a no go here). With that in mind, you’ll have to deal with plenty of attacks in the battle, and you can learn about them below:

Fireball

Seartooth will spew a large Fireball that will head towards you, this is slow enough that provided you’re at midrange or further, you can easily dodge to the side of it. If you’re up close though, this becomes a tougher task.

(1 of 2) Seartooth can launch Fireballs at will.

Seartooth can launch Fireballs at will. (left), It will also dive toward you and deal damage if it connects with its massive hitbox. (right)

Diving Flop

Seartooth will slightly take to the air before coming crashing down toward you in a dive motion. This can be a tricky attack to avoid if you’ve not got the camera focused on it so get ready to dodge to either side to avoid it.

Drop Slam

Seartooth will hover higher than the previous attack and a large red AoE marker will appear, shortly after, it will slam into the ground dealing heavy damage to you. The best way to avoid this attack is recognize when Seartooth is hovering and start moving out, if you’re in the middle when the AoE indicator shows, you’re probably not getting out of the way of it.

Fire Breath Ray

Seartooth will spew a massive breath of fire that sweeps across from right to left, this has a large range but if you’re on the other side when this attack starts, you can rush behind the dragon and get some free attacks on it.

(1 of 3) Try to dodge roll at the moment of impact to avoid the drop slam if you’re too close.

Fireball Volley

Seartooth will take to the skies and begin launching multiple Fireballs toward you, this is the same as the other Fireball attack, just more to deal with at once. Keep your distance when you see Seartooth take to the skies and run to the sides to avoid each one.

As mentioned above, you’re by no means to fully take out a dragon yet but fortunately, you only need to get its health down to 75%. Still, this is no easy feat as you will take heavy damage if you get struck by its attacks and you won’t deal that damage quick enough to make this a speedy battle. Seartooth Vyrantus is weak to Cold and resists Fire, but if you did bring Davrin with you for this battle, he’ll be able to Combo with Neve which will make life much easier.

The key to taking Seartooth down quickly is by paying attention to when its limbs take on a purple glow, this indicates that it’s the current weak point and you should try to strike it before it changes. Additionally, look to deal as much Stagger damage as you can, the moment it’s filled, the dragon will crash to the ground and its heart will become available, this will deal massive damage to it and most likely end the battle should you have an Ultimate ready to go at the same time.

You can deal massive damage to Vyrantus’ heart when you stagger it.

After the fight you’ll ponder the strategic mismatch you find yourself in and get an update about Treviso. Bad news all around. Following that you’ll be back in The Lighthouse and this quest will end, earning you 2,570 EXP, 400 gold, the "Upend" iconUpend Rune, +400 Shadow Dragons Strength and some gear.
